Usman Tariq says professionals across cricket tell him the same thing when they meet him. Batters who question his bowling action on the field are not hurting him. They are hurting themselves.

Three batters from three different countries have publicly questioned Tariq’s action in 2026. Tom Banton of England, Cameron Green of Australia, and Tim David. All three did it after being dismissed. None of them raised it before facing him.
The most direct confrontation came during the ILT20 2026 Qualifier 1 in Abu Dhabi. Banton was batting on 63 off 27 balls when Tariq dismissed him. On his way out, Banton pointed at the bowler and gestured to his face, shouting that Tariq was throwing the ball. Tariq, who usually avoids responding, could not let this one pass.

Earlier in the year, Cameron Green mimicked a baseball-style throwing motion after Tariq dismissed him during the second T20I between Pakistan and Australia at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Green was batting on 35 off 20 when he fell to the spinner. Tariq responded on Instagram with a video of a child crying, captioned “After getting out.” Green later apologized privately. Tariq posted “Apology accepted.”
Then in July, during The Hundred, Tim David edged a wide delivery from Tariq straight into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. David immediately suggested to the umpire that it should be called a no-ball for the bowler’s action. He even called for a DRS review. The umpire rejected both. David walked off. On-field confrontations like these have become a recurring theme across cricket, from Travis Head explaining his handshake exchange with Kohli to the ICC stepping in over dressing room conduct during the Ashes.
Tariq’s position is clear. The batters are not the authority on his action. The umpires are.

Is Usman Tariq’s bowling action legal?
Usman Tariq’s bowling action has been tested and cleared twice by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s biomechanics lab in Lahore. The ICC deems an action illegal if a bowler’s elbow extends by more than 15 degrees during the delivery stride. Tariq’s elbow extension was found to be within the legal limit on both occasions.
He was first reported for a suspect action during the 2024 Pakistan Super League by umpires Asif Yaqoob and Richard Illingworth. He was reported again during the 2025 PSL. Both times, testing cleared him within a week.
The unusual appearance of his action comes from a biological condition. Tariq has spoken about it publicly.

Ashwin has publicly defended Tariq’s unique journey in Pakistan cricket, calling him “quite intelligent” and stating that he “knows the game very well.” Ashwin has consistently spoken about protecting players from external noise, and his backing of Tariq fits that pattern. Saeed Ajmal, who went through his own action controversy, said bowlers like Tariq need protection from the PCB. Tariq confirmed the board has been proactive in managing his development.
Despite the continued debate from batters, no official complaint has been lodged against Tariq by any team, any match referee, or the ICC.

The timing tells you everything. Banton questioned the action after being dismissed for 63. Green did it after falling for 35. David did it after edging one to the keeper. Not one of them raised the issue before facing Tariq. Not one of them reported it through the official process after the match.
When a batter cannot pick a bowler, the instinct is to find something else to blame. Questioning the action on-field is a pressure tactic dressed up as a legitimate concern. It is designed to plant doubt in the umpire’s mind and unsettle the bowler in front of millions. Every dressing room knows this. When you walk off mimicking a throwing action, you are not filing a complaint. You are telling the world you got beaten and cannot accept it.
That is why professionals privately tell Tariq these batters damage their own reputation. The process exists. Report it, get it tested, accept the result. Three batters chose theatre over process. The PCB tested Tariq twice. The ICC has not acted. The umpires on the field have not intervened. The action is cleared. Everything after that is noise.
Tariq currently plays for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred. He finished as the highest wicket-taker for Warwickshire in the 2026 T20 Blast with 16 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 16 and an economy of 6.09. He has crossed 100 T20 wickets in his career.
