Jemimah Rodrigues Ruled Out of Asia Cup and Asian Games: What a High-Grade Tear Really Means

Cricket News

Jemimah Rodrigues has been ruled out of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup and the Asian Games after the BCCI confirmed a high-grade right hamstring tear. The injury ends her involvement in India’s next two major white-ball assignments with no recovery timeline announced.

The BCCI Medical Team assessed Rodrigues at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and confirmed the diagnosis on August 14. The Women’s Selection Committee has named Pratika Rawal as her replacement for the Asia Cup. No replacement for the Asian Games squad has been announced.

“Jemimah Rodrigues sustained a right hamstring injury on 3rd August while playing in The Hundred in England. The BCCI Medical Team clinically assessed her at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, and the assessment confirmed a high-grade tear. Consequently, she has been ruled out of the upcoming ACC Women’s Asia Cup in the UAE and the Asian Games in Japan.”

BCCI, official press release, August 14, 2026

Rodrigues suffered the injury playing for Southern Brave against Welsh Fire in The Hundred on August 3. She had been one of the standout performers in the competition, scoring 143 runs in six innings at an average of 35.75 and a strike rate of 131.19. She won two Player-of-the-Match awards before her campaign ended.

Southern Brave had signed her as a direct pick for £60,000. They replaced her with Australian allrounder Charli Knott for the remaining matches.

Rodrigues is India’s fourth-highest T20I run-scorer with 2,824 runs at a strike rate of 119. In the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup semi-final, she hit an unbeaten 127 against seven-time champions Australia, powering India to a record chase of 338.

This is the second time an injury in The Hundred has disrupted her international schedule. In 2022, a hand injury with Northern Superchargers ruled her out of India’s tour of England. India lost that T20I series 1-2.

Insider Read:

A high-grade hamstring tear is a partial or near-complete rupture of the muscle fibres. The hamstring drives every batting movement that generates power through the back leg: driving through the line, exploding out of the crease, sprinting between wickets. A batter cannot play around this injury.

The realistic recovery window for this grade of tear is 12 to 16 weeks of full rehabilitation before return to match play. Rushing a hamstring back before the muscle has fully remodelled is how recurrence happens, and recurrent hamstring tears become career-defining problems.

Pratika Rawal Steps In, India’s Path Forward

Pratika Rawal receives her maiden T20I call-up. She was selected ahead of Anushka Sharma and Harleen Deol, both of whom have previous T20I experience. Rawal has not played a T20 match since the Challenger Trophy in November 2024, where she scored 142 runs at a strike rate of 111.81.

Rawal’s own road back has been difficult. An ankle injury during the 2025 ODI World Cup kept her out of the Women’s Premier League, and she missed the Lord’s Test against England last month with another setback. She had been set to join Warwickshire for the One-Day Cup before receiving the India call-up.

Rodrigues is not the only absentee. Shreyanka Patil is also missing due to an ankle ligament injury, adding to India’s growing list of injured players. Legspinner Prema Rawat, who replaced Patil during the T20 World Cup, retains her place.

India’s Asia Cup campaign begins against Thailand in Dubai on August 30. They face Hong Kong on September 3 and Pakistan on September 5 in Group A. The tournament runs from August 28 to September 13 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The Asian Games women’s cricket tournament starts September 17 at Korogi Athletic Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. India, the defending gold medalists from Hangzhou 2023, face hosts Japan in the quarter-finals. The women’s medal matches are scheduled for September 22.

India’s updated Asia Cup squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Shafali Verma, Pratika Rawal, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (WK), G. Kamalini (WK), Arundhati Reddy, Prema Rawat, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Renuka Thakur, Nandni Sharma, Kranti Gaud.
