Matthew Hayden has called for three players to be dropped from Australia’s Test side after their nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin. He named Marnus Labuschagne and Jake Weatherald as the two batters who should go, and proposed moving Travis Head from opening down to No.3.
Hayden’s blueprint is the most specific reshuffle any former Australian player has put forward since the Darwin loss. He wants Matt Renshaw to open, raised Sam Konstas as another option, and questioned whether both Beau Webster and Cameron Green need to play in the same XI.
Labuschagne has not scored a Test century since the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester in 2023. That is 30 innings across three years. His average in that stretch sits at 24.74, less than half of the 54.59 career average he built between 2019 and 2023.

Hayden’s fix starts with Head. He wants Australia’s most destructive batter moved to No.3 and the opening slots filled with players who actually want to bat there. Renshaw is his first choice. Hayden said he has been pushing for Renshaw’s recall for at least 12 months, that Renshaw is match-fit, and that the selectors knew what he was but have never committed to finding out what he actually is.
Renshaw scored 499 runs at 49.90 in the 2025-26 Sheffield Shield season with three centuries, including one under pink-ball conditions. He has not played Test cricket since February 2023. He is 30 years old, bats left-handed, and has developed his leg spin into a genuine secondary bowling option.
Weatherald, the man Renshaw would likely replace, averaged 20.36 across six Tests and 12 innings since debuting in the Ashes. His technique came under scrutiny in Darwin, where his weight sat entirely on the back foot with his front foot drifting outside leg stump.
Hayden also floated Konstas as an alternative. The 20-year-old smashed 60 on debut against India at the 2024 Boxing Day Test but averages 16.30 across five Tests. He scored just 1 in the CA XI warm-up match against Bangladesh in Darwin.
Ponting and Waugh Add Weight
Ricky Ponting did not name specific replacements the way Hayden did, but he made the selectors’ position harder to defend.
“There had been enough evidence for me coming here to suggest that they weren’t going to lose anything, or much at all, by starting that regeneration, by maybe bringing in another opener, or by maybe bringing in someone at No.3. And I think if they lose here, then that has to happen.”

Mark Waugh went further on scale, calling the Darwin result “possibly the biggest upset I can remember in Australia.” He pointed out that Bangladesh achieved it without their two best fast bowlers, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam, against an Australian side at full strength.
Australia were bowled out for 198 on day one after Pat Cummins won the toss. Bangladesh replied with 426, built around Tanzid Hasan’s 101 and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 84. Hasan Mahmud finished with nine wickets across the match. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took five in Australia’s second innings to seal the result.
Cameron Green’s 104 in the second innings was the only resistance. It likely saved his spot if the selectors follow Hayden’s recommendation to drop one of the two all-rounders. Webster, who made scores of 12 and 28, would be the more vulnerable of the pair.
Bangladesh needed just 57 to win. Mominul Haque finished the chase with a boundary. Cummins chose not to bowl himself across the 14.2 overs of the fourth innings.

Hayden opened in 103 Tests. He stood at the other end while Ponting built his career at No.3. He knows what that position demands, and it is not what Head has been asked to do at the top of the order.
Australia’s No.3 has always been a counter-attacking role. When the openers fall early, the No.3 walks in under pressure and takes the fight back. That is Head’s entire game. Opening restricts those instincts because the new ball demands patience and a tighter technique, neither of which play to his strengths. Hayden is not proposing a demotion. He is proposing that Australia stop misusing their best middle-order weapon to patch a hole he was never designed to fill. The selectors have been using the opening slot to avoid the harder decision at No.3. Hayden is telling them the shortcut has run out.

The second Test starts in Mackay. Three of Australia’s loudest voices in commentary, Hayden, Ponting, and Waugh, are now on the record saying the same thing. The selectors have heard the case. The question is whether they act before the Australian summer forces the decision for them.
