Six captains stood around a trophy in the Netherlands this week. Behind them, a church spire and a cricket ground most fans have never heard of. The European T20 Premier League starts on August 26, 2026.
Thirty matches across the Netherlands and Ireland. Six franchises. Rotterdam Dockers face Amsterdam Flames in Voorburg to open the tournament. The final is September 20 in Malahide.
The names would headline any T20 league in the world.

What separates the ETPL from every other franchise league is who built these squads. Maxwell co-owns the Belfast Wolves and captains them. Du Plessis bought the Rotterdam franchise alongside Klaasen and Jonty Rhodes, then named himself captain.
Dravid owns the Dublin Guardians and installed Ashwin as captain and mentor. Steve Waugh’s consortium bought Amsterdam. Edinburgh belongs to former New Zealand internationals Nathan McCullum and Kyle Mills. Glasgow is co-owned by Matthew Hayden.
Every franchise has at least one former international as an owner. The tournament itself is co-owned at league level by Abhishek Bachchan through Rules Sport Tech.

Franchises were sold at £11.1 million each over 10 years. The annual salary budget per franchise is £1.1 million. That is a fraction of the IPL and less than the SA20. Every international who signed chose a month in the Netherlands and Ireland over rest or a bigger payday elsewhere.
Two of the six captains are associate nation players. Scott Edwards leads Amsterdam alongside Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh. George Munsey captains Glasgow with Livingstone, Finn Allen, and Lungi Ngidi in his squad.

The ETPL removes that dynamic entirely. When Maxwell walks out to bat for the Belfast Wolves, there is nobody above him to answer to. He picked the squad. He set the strategy. If it fails, there is no one to blame and no one to sack him. That kind of freedom sounds ideal until the third loss in a row, when every other franchise has a mechanism to course-correct and his does not. The most dangerous position in cricket is a captain who cannot be dropped.
The Seven-Year Wait
This league has failed before. The 2019 Euro T20 Slam collapsed two weeks before its start date. COVID blocked the 2020 relaunch. The 2025 version was postponed when investors shifted focus to The Hundred’s franchise sales.
What changed is the ownership model. Previous attempts relied on outside investment with no personal connection to the teams. This version put cricketers in charge.
The league projects net revenue of $11.2 million in its first year, rising to $16.8 million by 2030. Modest numbers. The ETPL is betting that player credibility will do what outside capital could not.
Maxwell pointed to what happened with USA cricket as evidence that the model can work quickly.
“And if they had probably caught SKY, they might have even upset India there as well. And hopefully the same thing will happen with the ETPL. It can happen quite fast, the growth in these nations.”

Cricket Scotland, Cricket Ireland, and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association sanctioned the league through the ICC. Seventeen matches in Voorburg until September 6, then the league moves to Malahide for the remaining fixtures, qualifier, and final.
