Kevin Pietersen was asked a simple question on his Instagram story. Name the first batter that comes to mind for each cricket-playing country. For India, there was no pause. Virat Kohli.
This came shortly after the ECB appointed Pietersen as England’s specialist white-ball mentor for the 2027 World Cup cycle. He is back inside a dressing room, back in the cricket conversation daily. And when the question landed, the answer was still Kohli.
What cameras and quizzes capture is the name. What they miss is the 15-year dressing room conviction behind it, and why that answer was never going to be anyone else.

| Country | Pietersen’s Pick | Status |
|---|---|---|
| England | Kevin Pietersen | Retired |
| Australia | Ricky Ponting | Retired |
| South Africa | Jacques Kallis | Retired |
| West Indies | Chris Gayle | Retired |
| New Zealand | Stephen Fleming | Retired |
| Pakistan | Babar Azam | Active |
| India | Virat Kohli | Active |
Six of the seven names belong to players who have finished their careers. Ponting, Kallis, Gayle, Fleming, and Pietersen himself are all retired legends. The only active names on the entire list are Kohli and Babar Azam. In a country that produced Sachin Tendulkar, Pietersen’s reflex answer was not the player with 100 international centuries. It was Kohli.
That instinct has a starting point. Pietersen and Kohli shared a dressing room at Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the 2009 and 2010 IPL seasons. Pietersen captained the side. Kohli was in his early twenties, a friendship that began inside the RCB setup and never faded. Pietersen has called him “a chubby little fella back then” but one whose determination to be the best was already impossible to miss.
“Sitting in the bus with Virat and batting with Virat, I knew he was destined for greatness because of how he approached the game and the way he learnt and the questions he asked.”

That early impression never shifted. When asked to pick between Kohli and Steve Smith, his answer was immediate.
“Kohli. Hands down. Freakshow. His record chasing winning games for India…”

He has compared Kohli to Cristiano Ronaldo, placing him “right at the top of cricket.” He has called him the reason for “the turnaround in Indian cricket.” The position has not changed in over a decade.

When you have shared a dressing room with someone, the association is not intellectual. It is physical. You remember the sound of their bat, the intensity of their warm-up, the way they walked out to bat like the ground belonged to them. Pietersen saw that in a 21-year-old Kohli at RCB and it never left him.
What separates Kohli from every other name on that list except Kallis is the consistency across all three formats over more than 15 years. Test cricket, ODIs, T20Is. Different demands, different disciplines, different mental loads. Most greats dominate one or two formats and fade in the third. Kohli dominated all three for over a decade. At 37, in an era where contemporaries like Root are navigating the same career twilight, Kohli’s fitness remains at the top of international cricket, a standard that teammates like Harshal Patel have described as transformative. The aggression and aura he carries are not for cameras. Opponents feel it. Foreign players wear his brand of spikes as a mark of respect. When Pietersen answered that quiz, he was not making a selection. He was stating something his instinct settled on 15 years ago and never revisited.

The friendship extends beyond cricket opinions. After India’s ODI series against England in February 2025, Kohli gifted a signed India jersey to Pietersen’s son Dylan.
“Got home and gave Dylan a gift from Virat Kohli and it goes straight on! Fits like a glove. Thanks buddy!”

A signed jersey for a friend’s son. An instant answer on an Instagram quiz. Fifteen years of the same conviction. For Kevin Pietersen, India has always meant one name.
