Chinmay Sutar’s 400*: Why Mizoram Declared 43 Runs Short of the Ranji Record

Chinmay Sutar, Indian domestic cricketer, wearing a magenta sports jersey and green mirrored sunglasses, looking to the right with a neatly trimmed beard and styled dark hair against a softly blurred outdoor cricket ground.

Chinmay Sutar scored 400 not out off 517 balls for Mizoram against Nagaland on Monday, in only his second first-class match. He hit 46 fours and seven sixes at the Nagaland Cricket Association Stadium in Sovima.

He is only the second batter in Ranji Trophy history to reach 400. Mizoram declared at 581/9 the moment he got there, with BB Nimbalkar’s record of 443 not out just 43 runs away.

Sutar, 29, came through Mumbai cricket and moved to Mizoram this season.

From the outside, stopping 43 short of a 78-year-old record looks like a missed chance. From the inside, it was the easiest call of the match.

Mizoram ended Day 1 on 331/5. On Day 2 they slipped to 391/9, and Sutar was on 231 when No. 11 Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak walked out.

What followed was an unbroken 190 for the last wicket. Chhakchhuak faced 76 balls for his 14 runs, while Sutar scored 169 of the stand.

It is the third-highest last-wicket partnership in Ranji Trophy history. The record is 233, by Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh for Delhi against Mumbai in 1991-92.

Sutar went to tea on 392. He reached 400 in the 155th over, and the declaration followed.

“400 not out. And not out of the history books anytime soon!”

Insider Read

Chinmay Sutar No dressing room is thinking about 443 at that stage. After 517 balls, a batter runs on habit, not hunger, and everyone knows the next ball could be the one. A round 400 not out is a clean finish, while getting out on 420 chasing a record feels like failure even when it is not.

What matters more is time. Mizoram lost to Manipur by three wickets a week earlier, and matches are only won by taking 20 wickets. After 155 overs in the field, Nagaland’s batters were the tired ones, and every over spent on a record was one less over to bowl at them.

“Chinmay Sutar makes it a two-person club, with an unbeaten 400 for Mizoram vs Nagaland on Day 2 of Round 2.” … “a 400 is an extremely rare occurence.”

Amol Karhadkar, on X, 19 October 2026

“Batting on the crease for over 500 balls is a dying art today.”

Priyank Panchal, on X, 19 October 2026

Few saw this coming. Sutar took a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association to join Mizoram as a guest player, and was run out on 99 on his Ranji debut against Manipur last week.

Before the move, he played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and scored 212 runs in six innings as MSC Maratha Royals retained the Mumbai T20 League title in June. He also played for India at the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, scoring a List A hundred against Hong Kong.
