Yash Thakur’s father did not live to see this day. The 27-year-old Vidarbha pacer was at Nagpur airport, waiting for his bags after returning from India A’s Sri Lanka tour, when the most important call of his career came through.
India named their T20I squad for Zimbabwe on July 6, handing four players maiden senior call-ups. The three-match series takes place at Harare Sports Club on July 23, 25, and 26. Shreyas Iyer leads the side, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain.

Prabhsimran Singh is the batting story of this squad. The Punjab Kings opener scored 510 runs in IPL 2026 at a strike rate of 168.87, backing up his 549 runs in 2025. That makes him the first uncapped Indian to cross 500 runs in two separate IPL seasons. He added 84 for India A in the 50-over tri-series in Sri Lanka before this call came.
India’s pace unit is entirely new. Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna, all part of the England squad, are out. Four bowlers with very different stories take their places.
Ashok Sharma, 23, grew up bowling in the bylanes of Rampurara village in Rajasthan. He spent time in KKR and RR squads without getting a game before Gujarat Titans gave him his maiden IPL season. He hit 154.2 kph against Rajasthan Royals, the fastest delivery of IPL 2026, and finished as the top wicket-taker in the 2025/26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 22 wickets in 10 games.
Mayank Yadav returns for the first time since October 2024. A torn hamstring cut his 2023 short. A side strain halted him in 2024, just as back-to-back Player of the Match performances were building his case. He played only four matches for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026. Zimbabwe is where he gets to remind the selectors what he can do when fit.
Thakur himself took five wickets in India A’s 50-over tri-series and five more in the red-ball series in Sri Lanka. Prince Yadav completes the pace battery. Harsh Dubey, who debuted in ODIs against Afghanistan in June, adds his maiden T20I call-up to a growing international record.

The choice of Zimbabwe itself is deliberate. Harare conditions carry pace and the ball skids on to the bat. A 150 kph delivery that fights the conditions in England works with them in Harare. India has consistently used this series as a controlled entry point for pace bowlers it believes in. These three are not here by accident.
