R Ashwin says there is “no better person” than MS Dhoni to take over as Chennai Super Kings head coach, if Dhoni is willing to do the job.
Ashwin made the statement on July 15, days after CSK and Stephen Fleming ended their 18 year partnership as head coach. Fleming had led CSK to five IPL titles since 2009, making him the most successful coach in the league’s history.
CSK finished outside the top four for three straight seasons before this split, and that decline is the backdrop to why the coaching conversation is happening at all. Fleming departed on good terms, calling his time with CSK “the privilege of my coaching career” in an official statement on July 12.

The word “willing” in that quote matters more than the word “better,” because moving from playing to coaching is a completely different kind of pressure even for someone who has handled the biggest moments in the game.
Dhoni earned the “Captain Cool” tag by making calm decisions under the most extreme pressure cricket offers, from the last over of the 2011 World Cup final to CSK’s multiple IPL title chases. Those decisions came from being in the middle of the game himself, reading the situation ball by ball as a batter and a wicketkeeper standing behind the stumps.
Coaching removes that. A head coach reads the game from outside the boundary rope, through team meetings and player conversations rather than direct control of the moment. This is a genuinely different skill from the one that made Dhoni a title winning captain, and it is likely why even Ashwin frames his backing as conditional rather than certain.
There is also a structural side to this that outsiders rarely notice. When a legendary player becomes head coach over people who were recently his teammates, the authority he had as captain does not automatically carry over. A dressing room built on mutual respect between equals has to be rebuilt around a coach player hierarchy, and that adjustment takes time even for someone as respected as Dhoni.
This is likely what sits behind reports describing Dhoni’s candidacy as something that complicates CSK’s coaching search rather than simplifying it. The complication is not about Dhoni’s cricket knowledge. It is about whether a title winning captain wants to trade the dugout seat he already knows for a coaching role that asks something different of him.
Ashwin’s support for Dhoni has been building for months, not something said only after Fleming left. In April, on his YouTube show Ash ki Baat, Ashwin said plainly that Dhoni’s presence has shaped CSK’s entire era.
“No one can replace Dhoni’s experience. You accept it or not, CSK’s 99% success is because of Dhoni.”

Ashwin has never shied away from speaking candidly about how CSK and the wider team management handle its senior players. He took a similarly direct stance earlier this month when he argued that Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the T20I squad sent the wrong message to every player watching how the team treats its veterans, a pattern of straight talk that runs through his comments on Dhoni’s coaching future as well.
CSK’s own leadership has kept the door open without making a firm commitment. CEO Kasi Viswanathan said in May that Dhoni’s future with the franchise, whether as a player, coach or mentor, depends entirely on Dhoni himself. No official announcement on a coaching appointment has been made by CSK at the time of writing.

Ashwin’s connection to Dhoni goes back to 2008, when Dhoni gave him an early opportunity in CSK’s dressing room during his first IPL season. Ashwin has spoken about this personal debt before, separate from the current coaching discussion.
Fleming’s exit closes the most successful coaching era in IPL history. What replaces it, according to the man who has watched Dhoni longest from inside that dressing room, may depend less on ability and more on whether Dhoni wants a different kind of pressure than the one he mastered as a player.
