R Sai Kishore revealed the one variable in spin bowling that no batsman can ever detect: grip pressure. In a detailed spin bowling masterclass on YouTube, the Gujarat Titans and Tamil Nadu left-arm spinner explained that while a batsman can study a spinner’s hand position, seam orientation, and wrist angle, there is no way to gauge how tightly or loosely the bowler is holding the ball.

“A batsman can see how you’re holding it, but he can’t see the pressure. So he cannot see how tight I’m holding it or how loose I’m holding it… if I hold it a little more loose, I can’t spin the ball. There is no friction on the ball. The batsman can never tell.”

Grip pressure determines friction between the fingers and the ball. More friction means more revolutions. Less friction means the ball slides out without bite. Every other element of a spinner’s release, the position of the wrist, the angle of the seam, the trajectory of the arm, is visible to a batsman watching from 22 yards. Grip pressure is not. Sai Kishore’s disclosure carries weight because of who he is and how he bowls. Standing six foot three, the 29-year-old uses his height and long fingers to generate both spin and overspin. This is the logic behind the carrom ball’s late addition to his arsenal. The ball is ageing, and the spinner is making micro-adjustments to grip that no camera, no analyst, and no batsman can detect.
