India’s selectors have identified a group of 15 fast bowlers for the future, according to a Sportstar report, with Mohammed Shami not part of those plans. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed the shift in approach, stating that the focus is now on giving young players more opportunities ahead of the World Test Championship and the 2027 ODI World Cup, while calling Shami “one of India’s finest match-winners.”

The statement is the clearest signal yet that Shami’s international career is over in all but name. The 35-year-old’s last international appearance was the 2025 Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, where he finished the tournament with nine wickets including a five-wicket haul against Bangladesh. He became the fastest Indian to 200 ODI wickets during that campaign.
Since then, Shami did everything a player can do to force his way back. He took 37 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal in 2025-26, including career-best figures of 8/90 in the semifinal against Jammu and Kashmir. He added 16 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and 15 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He picked up 12 wickets for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026. None of it changed the selectors’ position.

It means the selection committee has sat down, mapped out India’s fast bowling needs across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is for the next two to three years, and decided exactly who fills each slot. That kind of structured planning did not exist in Indian cricket a decade ago. Fast bowlers came and went based on fitness and form. Now there is a pipeline, and once a player is outside that pipeline, the system moves without him.
The number also tells you something about workload management. India cannot rely on Bumrah for every series. The selectors need five or six pacers ready for Tests, another cluster for white-ball cricket, and a few who can cross formats. Building that depth takes time, and every series given to a 35-year-old is a series taken away from someone in that group of 15 who needs international exposure before the 2027 World Cup.
Shami’s domestic numbers are impressive. But selection committees at this level are not reading scorecards alone. They are looking at bowling speeds across spells, recovery times between matches, and whether a body can handle back-to-back Tests in conditions like Australia or England. Ranji Trophy wickets answer one question. They do not answer all of them.
What Agarkar Said Before
This is not the first time Agarkar has addressed Shami’s absence. During the squad announcement for the Afghanistan series in May 2026, the chief selector was blunt.
“There was no discussion regarding him. As far as we have been told, at this point, his body is allowing him to play T20s. I know he has played a domestic season this year. But the information that I have got is that at this point, it’s T20 cricket that he is sort of ready for.”

The shift from “no discussion” in May to a confirmed group of 15 fast bowlers in August shows the selectors moving from individual decisions to a formal policy, according to the report. Shami is no longer being assessed series by series. He has been assessed out of the entire cycle.
Shami has refused to accept the verdict quietly. Speaking during IPL 2026, he addressed growing retirement speculation directly.

Mohammed Siraj is expected to take on greater responsibility alongside Bumrah, with younger pacers like Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav, and Mayank Yadav set to receive extended opportunities over the coming seasons, the report added.
