Adelaide Strikers have confirmed Ben Stokes as their marquee signing for BBL|16. The deal is worth approximately AUD $500,000, making him the highest-paid player in BBL history, surpassing Babar Azam’s previous record of AUD $420,000.
The 35-year-old will be available for the entire 2026-27 season, starting with the opener against Sydney Thunder at Manuka Oval, Canberra on December 16. It is his first BBL appearance in 12 years.
Stokes had interest from Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades. He chose Adelaide. The pull of Adelaide Oval and the chance to work under head coach Tim Paine proved decisive.
Paine and Stokes faced each other across some of the most hostile Ashes contests in recent memory. That shared history, built through competition at the highest level, shaped the recruitment.
The full-season commitment matters. Most overseas signings in the BBL play a handful of matches before returning to national duty or moving to the next franchise window.
Stokes, free of international obligations since retiring from England duty in June 2026, has no such constraint. Adelaide get him from first match to last.
His previous BBL stint was brief. Four matches for Melbourne Renegades in the 2014-15 season, as a young all-rounder still finding his way.
The player returning to Australia is unrecognisable from that version. Between then and now: a World Cup final, Headingley 2019, an England Test captaincy, and a retirement speech at Trent Bridge that ended with the words “reasons can wait.”
What Stokes’ Record Deal Signals for the BBL
The BBL’s shift to a direct-signing model for overseas players replaced the old draft system with open-market negotiations. Stokes is the first major proof of concept.
The league wants global star power to compete with the IPL and SA20. But the deal sits uncomfortably alongside an unresolved dispute between Cricket Australia and domestic players over BBL pay.
Several senior Australian cricketers have held off signing CA contracts, frustrated that an overseas import commands a fee that dwarfs what local players earn in the same competition. That tension is not going away.
Tom Morris of 7Cricket first reported the deal on August 31. Adelaide confirmed it the following day.

The Strikers’ squad includes captain Matt Short and Jason Sangha. Alex Carey is contracted but unlikely to feature due to international commitments.
The season runs through to late January 2027 if Adelaide reach the final. For a player who described going back to Durham as “a new lease of life,” six weeks of Australian summer cricket continues a career now moving entirely on his own terms.
