Karn Sharma was in the Indian squad when MS Dhoni called a team meeting after the third Test in Melbourne on December 30, 2014. The players expected a routine discussion. Dhoni told them he was done with Test cricket.

BCCI confirmed the decision within hours. Dhoni’s Test career ended at 90 matches, 4,876 runs at 38.09, and a 45% win rate as captain across 60 Tests.
The fourth Test in Sydney was days away. Virat Kohli would captain India for the rest of the series and, as it turned out, for the next seven years.
Karn Sharma had a unique vantage point in that squad. He made his Test debut in the first match at Adelaide, selected because Dhoni was injured and Kohli was leading for the first time.
Sharma took four wickets, dismissing David Warner twice, Michael Clarke, and Chris Rogers. It remained his only Test.
Within weeks, he went from debuting under one captain to watching the other walk away. Few players in Indian cricket experienced that transition from so close.

Ishant Sharma, who played that Melbourne Test with a knee injury, later confirmed the same pattern. He recalled that Dhoni referenced it being his last Test during the match itself, but Ishant did not realize what he meant until afterwards. Dhoni had already decided to step aside and groom Wriddhiman Saha for the home season. Reaching 100 Tests was not a priority.
What “Nobody Will Know” Means After Years at CSK
Karn Sharma did not just witness that one meeting. He went on to spend multiple IPL seasons under Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings, winning titles in 2018 and 2021.
Across those years, he saw the same trait repeat. Dhoni operated on his own timeline, made calls that caught everyone around him off guard, and offered no explanation until the decision was already final. The Test retirement was the first time Sharma saw it. It was not the last.
Karn Sharma retired from all cricket on August 23, 2026, during the UP T20 League. He was 38. His career produced 270 first class wickets, 168 T20 wickets, and four IPL titles across three franchises: Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, Mumbai Indians in 2017, and Chennai Super Kings in 2018 and 2021. He remains the only player to win three consecutive IPL championships with three different teams.
His international career lasted four matches. But one was at Adelaide, where Indian cricket changed its approach under Kohli. And weeks later, he was in the room when Dhoni ended his Test career: quiet, final, and entirely on his own terms.
