Chennai Super Kings have frozen every coaching decision. The franchise will not interview candidates, finalize a structure, or announce Stephen Fleming’s replacement until MS Dhoni tells them what he wants.
Rohit Juglan of RevSportz reported on August 29 that CSK is waiting for Dhoni’s call.
“They are waiting for Thala to take the final call on either join as a coach or Mentor till then no other activities.”

Fleming stepped down on July 13 after 18 years and five IPL titles. CSK finished seventh in IPL 2026 with six wins and eight losses. Third consecutive year without playoffs since the 2023 title. The franchise needs a new direction. That direction runs through one person.
Juglan assessed that Dhoni is unlikely to take the head coach title. His July 30 report was more specific.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said in May that the franchise wants Dhoni in any form. Player, coach, or mentor. The exact role is Dhoni’s to define.
The coaching question does not exist in isolation. Dhoni’s equity stake negotiations with CSK collapsed during IPL 2026. He wanted to buy between 18% and 25% of the franchise. CSK offered 3%, raised it to 5.5%, and stopped. The gap was never bridged. All discussions were verbal. No written proposal existed.
Journalist Indranil Basu reported that Dhoni was willing to pay market price. CSK’s management did not agree to the numbers. The failed talks strained a relationship that dates back to 2008.
Dhoni did not play a single match in IPL 2026. The official reason was a calf muscle injury. Reports indicated he was fit but chose not to disturb the team’s balance. He turned 45 in July.
The coaching candidates are stuck. Michael Hussey, CSK’s current batting coach and the most experienced internal option, may not be available. Fleming, now England’s head coach, has offered Hussey a batting coach role ahead of the 2027 Ashes.
Hussey did not close the door. “There is a lot of different things to consider. My short answer is I would not say no to anything really,” he said about the England offer.
Kris Srikkanth was direct about what CSK must do first.
“What will MS Dhoni’s place in CSK be going forward? That arrangement has to be fixed first, and only then will everything else fall in place.”

Srikkanth backed Hussey as the “automatic head coach” if he stays. He ruled out Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum. Matthew Hayden proposed Dinesh Karthik for his Chennai roots. Dwayne Bravo and Eric Simons remain in the conversation.
None of these names matter until Dhoni speaks.
The Sunday Guardian reported on August 28 that CSK expects to announce a new head coach by September 20. The new appointment must have a connection to Dhoni. That timeline leaves less than a month, and the franchise has not started the process.

Mentor and head coach are not two names for the same job. A head coach runs training, picks the XI, sets match strategy, and answers for results. A mentor sits in the dugout, advises the captain, shapes team culture, and walks away from the press conference.
Dhoni choosing mentor means he wants influence without the daily accountability of results. He would have more say than the head coach on cricketing matters, according to multiple reports, but none of the exposure when a season goes wrong. The head coach answers to the franchise. The mentor answers to nobody.
That creates a specific power dynamic for whoever takes the head coach job. They will know from day one that the most influential person in the dressing room chose not to take their role. Every tactical disagreement will have an unspoken hierarchy. CSK has operated this way before, with Dhoni as captain and Fleming as coach. But captain and coach is a partnership. Mentor and coach is a chain of command.
