Naman Dhir Replaces Washington Sundar for 5 T20Is: Why India Withdrew Him

Naman Dhir has replaced Washington Sundar in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against West Indies, which starts on 6 October in Lucknow. Washington is not injured. The selectors have pulled him out so he can play red-ball cricket before India’s Test series in New Zealand.

The BCCI confirmed the change on 1 October. The same advisory also ruled Prasidh Krishna out of the third ODI.

“The Senior Selection Committee, in consultation with the team management, has decided to withdraw Washington Sundar from India’s squad for the T20I series against the West Indies.”

Washington is now free for the Ranji Trophy, which starts on 11 October. Tamil Nadu open against Rajasthan that day. India’s first Test in New Zealand starts on 19 November in Wellington.

Dhir got his first India call-up on 16 September, for the ODIs. It came after he scored 655 runs at a strike rate of 217.61 in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League. In the second ODI in Guwahati, he bowled part-time off-spin after Prasidh walked off.

On paper this is one off-spinning all-rounder swapped for another. From the inside, it is a bowler being given time to rebuild the long spells a Test match will demand.

Insider Read

In a T20I, an off-spinner bowls four overs, flat and into the pitch, and his job is to deny the batter room. A Test asks for the opposite: 20 or 25 overs in a day, flight, drift, and the patience to set a batter up over a whole spell. That takes a different rhythm and different legs, and you can’t build them in the nets.

Five T20Is would give Washington 20 overs at most in nearly two weeks. One Ranji day can give him that. The selectors are giving him long spells now, so that his body and his length are ready before Wellington, not during it.

Prasidh Krishna Ruled Out of Third ODI

Prasidh hurt his hamstring in Guwahati on 30 September. He bowled a four-over opening spell and came back for the 31st over, then walked off with figures of 1/45 from five overs.

“Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna sustained a left hamstring injury during the second ODI in Guwahati and has been ruled out of the third ODI.”

BCCI media advisory, 1 October 2026

Anshul Kamboj replaces him and joins the squad in Chandigarh for the third ODI on 3 October. Kamboj left India A’s match against Australia A in Puducherry midway to make the trip. Prasidh will go to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for scans.
