Vikrant Gupta has issued a direct warning about India’s 2027 World Cup preparations after the team’s ODI series loss to England.
“If this is India’s bowling attack without Jasprit Bumrah, then the team will struggle at the World Cup as well.”

India lost the three-match ODI series to England 1-2 at Lord’s on July 19. Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out the morning of the decider with reactive swelling in his left knee, an injury he sustained while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. England scored 387 for 3, the highest List A total ever made at Lord’s, and won by 27 runs.
Vikrant Gupta made three specific points in his post-series assessment. The dressing room was operating under insecurity. The defeat came from a combination of poor selection and an untested bowling attack. And Rohit Sharma’s 138 was the one genuine positive from a series that otherwise offered very little to build on. His concerns about the management are part of a pattern he flagged during the T20I phase of this same tour.

The Bowling Problem Has a Name
Gurnoor Brar conceded 97 runs without taking a wicket, the most expensive ODI figures ever recorded at Lord’s. Arshdeep Singh went for 72, also wicketless. Prince Yadav conceded 79 and took one. Prasidh Krishna was the only bowler who showed control, finishing with 2 for 69. The four India seamers who bowled the England innings had a combined total of 51 ODI appearances between them.
Kuldeep Yadav was in the squad and was not played. At Lord’s, with England’s openers Duckett and Bethell adding 200 before losing a wicket, Kuldeep was India’s only genuine wicket-taking variation after Bumrah was ruled out that morning. The management chose four seamers without the experience to contain a batting lineup in that form. Ravichandran Ashwin publicly questioned that decision after the match.
Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy were both injured before the tour started. India arrived for a series framed as a World Cup build-up already depleted, and then lost their best bowler the morning of the most important match. That is not bad luck. That is a structural problem with no visible solution in the current setup.

In professional cricket, the frontline bowler sets the reference point within an innings. His lines, his lengths, his early economy tell the other bowlers where to pitch and where to aim. Without Bumrah at Lord’s, each of the four India seamers had to find that reference point alone, with no shared pressure experience to fall back on. The damage was spread equally across all four spells for exactly this reason. Brar’s 0 for 97 is the clearest symptom, not the cause. The cause is that India have no bowling unit without Bumrah. They have individuals. Against a batting lineup of England’s quality, that difference is 387 for 3.

Rohit Sharma’s 138 in the chase was the one moment from this series worth holding on to. He became the first Indian man to score an ODI century at Lord’s, his 34th in the format, in a week when his own future was being debated in public. India still fell 27 runs short. Vikrant Gupta identified the innings as the biggest positive from the series while holding firm on his assessment of what the management got wrong throughout.
India won one match from nine outings on the UK tour. The ODI World Cup in South Africa is 15 months away. The bowling attack that played the decider at Lord’s is the same attack India will have every time Bumrah is unavailable during that tournament.
