The BCCI’s senior selection committee has informed Rohit Sharma that he will not be part of their plans beyond the current England series, with the third ODI at Lord’s on July 19 set to be his last international appearance, The Indian Express reported on July 16.

According to the report, the selection panel spoke to Sharma alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir last week and laid out their plans for the road ahead. The committee is looking to give Yashasvi Jaiswal a consistent run at the top of the order as they build toward the 2027 ODI World Cup. The decision on whether to formally announce his retirement has been left to Rohit himself. Devendra Pandey, the Indian Express journalist who wrote the piece, posted on his verified X account: “I fear that the day has arrived.” Neither Rohit nor the BCCI has made any public statement at time of publication.
This ending arrives on terms Rohit never accepted publicly. At the 2025 Champions Trophy final press conference in Dubai, he addressed ODI retirement rumours directly — he was not going anywhere, and he wanted no speculation spread about it. When he announced his Test retirement on Instagram in May 2025, the same post confirmed he would continue in ODIs. He stripped back two formats, managed a hamstring injury through IPL 2026, and returned to international cricket this summer with one goal still outstanding: the 50-over World Cup. He reached the final in 2023. He won the T20 title in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. The ODI World Cup in South Africa in 2027 was the only one left.
In this series he has scored 11 off 21 balls at Edgbaston and 26 off 47 at Cardiff, dismissed both times before finding any rhythm. The Cardiff innings was the more telling of the two: one six in 47 deliveries, a skied shot that dropped safely between fielders, dismissed eventually by the part-time off-spin of Will Jacks. Since October last year he has scored 563 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of 46.91. The runs exist. What Cardiff showed was something the numbers do not capture.

Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut against England in Nagpur in February 2025 and is not part of the current touring squad, is the planned successor for the opening slot alongside Gill. The match came and went on Sunday. Rohit scored 138 from 110 balls, his 34th ODI century, hitting 14 fours and five sixes in a chase that nearly worked. Kohli added 74. India reached 360 for 7 chasing 388 but fell 27 runs short, losing the series 2-1 England’s 387 for 3, built on Duckett’s 141 and a 192-run opening stand with Bethell, was the highest List A total ever posted at Lord’s.
No retirement announcement followed. BCCI secretary Saikia had dismissed the reports as untrue just 24 hours before the match. Whether Sunday was the last time Rohit batted for India in ODIs remains officially unclear. The innings, at least, left nothing unsaid.
