Sir Alastair Cook has said England’s Test team lacks a goal and a direction, calling the current state of the setup “a mess” in the wake of the departures of captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum within weeks of each other.
Cook made the remarks on Stick to Cricket EP53, released on July 17, 2026. A clip was shared by the verified @sticktocricket Instagram account and gained close to 1,000 likes, with Cook’s co-panellist Michael Vaughan among those who responded to it.

England entered the summer carrying the weight of a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia. They then lost a home Test series 2-1 against New Zealand in June 2026, their first home series defeat across three or more Tests since 2012. Stokes retired mid-series at Trent Bridge on June 28, saying he was burnt out after four years leading the side. McCullum was removed as Test head coach on July 12 and remains in the white-ball role through the 2027 World Cup.
A curfew breach added another layer to the breakdown. Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a London nightclub in the early hours of June 8, after England’s first Test win over New Zealand at Lord’s. A Saracens academy player aimed a punch at Atkinson that missed and struck an ECB security guard. Both were stood down for the second Test. They returned for the third.
Cook captained England 59 times in Tests and is England’s second-highest Test run scorer with 12,472 runs across 161 matches. He played at the centre of the England side that reached number one in the world. When he says the current setup lacks a goal and a direction, he is comparing it to something he experienced, not a standard he invented.
He has no personal stake in the coaching debate. In January 2026, Cook confirmed there had been “zero contact” from the ECB about a role for him. He is watching this from outside, with no candidate to push and no position to protect.
A Different Problem From Finding a New Coach
Andy Flower ruled himself out of the coaching vacancy on July 18, citing his commitments with London Spirit and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Justin Langer is now the frontrunner, with Andrew Flintoff and Jonathan Trott among the names on a nine-man shortlist. The ECB are moving quickly ahead of the Pakistan Test series.
Cook’s observation sits outside this discussion. He is not evaluating candidates. He is raising a question that a coaching appointment alone cannot answer: whether the incoming coach and captain will arrive with any agreed sense of what England Test cricket is actually building toward.
He made clear what the situation demands from whoever takes the role.

Players knew where they stood within a structure that had a clear endpoint. That is what Cook means by goal and direction.
When that kind of clarity breaks down, as it has here through a combination of poor results, a retirement mid-series, a curfew breach, and the removal of the coach, the effects show up in small decisions rather than in one dramatic collapse. Cook has been inside dressing rooms that had this clarity and ones that had lost it. His use of the word “mess” is not commentary. It is diagnosis.
Harry Brook has said it would be a “great honour” to lead England at Test level, with Stokes giving him full backing. The appointment has not yet been confirmed. Whoever takes the captaincy alongside whoever gets the coaching role will inherit exactly the situation Cook is describing. The direction question is not a selection question or a tactical one. It is the one that everything else depends on.
