Ashwin Wants Bumrah to Play Only ODIs Until the 2027 World Cup, but He Said the Opposite Eight Months Ago

Cricket Statements

R. Ashwin believes Jasprit Bumrah should play only ODI cricket until the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, stating that India’s pace spearhead needs careful workload management to extend his career. Ashwin made the recommendation on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat, days after Bumrah was ruled out of the third ODI against England at Lord’s with a left knee injury. He added that even within ODIs, Bumrah should not be overburdened if there are long gaps between series.

Bumrah returned to ODI cricket on July 14, 2026, at Edgbaston after a 968-day absence from the format. His last ODI before that was the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. In the two ODIs he played against England, he took 2 wickets from 19 overs at an economy of four runs per over. During fielding in the second ODI at Cardiff, he sustained an impact injury to his left knee. Reactive swelling followed, and he missed the series decider.

Jasprit Bumrah has not received fitness clearance for India’s upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka starting August 15 in Galle. He has been named in the squad but is scheduled to report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence on July 30 for assessment. Team doctors will evaluate whether his knee can withstand the repeated run-ups and extended bowling spells that Test cricket demands.

Ashwin’s latest recommendation is not new in isolation. He has spoken about Bumrah’s workload consistently over the past year. But the specific advice has changed direction completely. Two weeks before this latest statement, after Bumrah’s return at Edgbaston, Ashwin had called him India’s only irreplaceable player on the same channel.

“Finding a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah is not difficult; it is impossible.”

That assessment explains why Ashwin’s workload concern carries urgency. If Bumrah is irreplaceable, every outing that risks injury without feeding a major tournament is a gamble India cannot afford.

Eight Months Ago, Ashwin Said the Opposite

In November 2025, during a joint YouTube conversation with AB de Villiers, Ashwin’s position was that Bumrah should prioritize T20 cricket and avoid Test matches unless India desperately needed him.

“For India’s sake and Bumrah’s sake, I’d rather he focus on T20 cricket. Not waste energy on meaningless ODIs.”

R. Ashwin, YouTube conversation with AB de Villiers, November 28, 2025

The context made that advice logical. The 2026 T20 World Cup was three months away. Bumrah was India’s most important bowler for that tournament. Protecting him for T20s and keeping him out of ODIs, a format India had no major event in, was straightforward.

Bumrah delivered. He took 14 wickets at the 2026 T20 World Cup, finished as joint-highest wicket-taker, and won Player of the Match in the final against New Zealand at Ahmedabad. India defended their title.

Now the target has changed. The 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa is 15 months away. T20 international cricket no longer feeds a major ICC event until the 2028 T20 World Cup. Ashwin’s advice has flipped accordingly: play only ODIs, protect the body for what matters next.

The underlying principle has stayed the same across both recommendations. Bumrah should play only the format that feeds the next ICC event. The format changes. The logic does not.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed in June 2026 that resting Bumrah from T20 internationals against Ireland and England was a deliberate call to keep him fit for ODIs and Tests. The BCCI’s blueprint, first reported by PTI in March 2026, mapped out roughly 30 to 35 games for Bumrah in the World Cup cycle with T20Is treated as the lowest priority format.

Between the 2023 World Cup final and his ODI return in July 2026, Bumrah played 42 international matches: 21 Tests and 21 T20Is. Zero ODIs. That gap tells the story of how India allocated his body across the last cycle. The next cycle reverses the allocation entirely.

Ashwin is not the only voice echoing this message. Glenn McGrath, speaking on July 27, said Bumrah needs a proper off-season and cannot be expected to shoulder India’s entire fast bowling workload alone. McGrath pointed to Bumrah’s unusual bowling action as both his greatest strength and the source of extra physical stress on his body.

Bumrah’s IPL 2026 season added to the concern. He took 4 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 102.50 and an economy of 8.36. It was statistically the worst IPL season of his career. The break between the IPL and the England ODIs seemed to help. At Edgbaston, 53 per cent of his deliveries landed on the 6-to-8-metre length, a high ratio even by his standards. The rhythm was back. Then the knee injury interrupted it again.

India’s pace bowling depth for the 2027 World Cup remains a genuine concern. Ashwin himself raised this after India’s ODI series loss to Australia in October 2025, asking who India’s support bowlers would be if Bumrah was unavailable. Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana form the core group, but Rana is currently injured and Arshdeep has been searching for rhythm in the 50-over format. Gurnoor Brar impressed on debut at Edgbaston, dismissing both England openers, but he is untested beyond a handful of games.

The 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa will be played in October and November 2027. Before that, India face Test series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia at home in the WTC cycle. Managing Bumrah across all of these while keeping him fit and sharp for the World Cup is the most important selection puzzle India faces over the next 15 months.

Insider Read

When Ashwin talks about Bumrah’s workload, he is not offering a commentator’s opinion. He is drawing from years of bowling alongside Bumrah in the same Indian dressing room.

Ashwin and Bumrah shared the bowling attack in Test matches across multiple tours. That means they shared the physio room too. In a professional dressing room, you do not need a medical report to know when a fast bowler is carrying something. You see it in the run-up before anyone outside the team notices. The stride shortens by half a foot. The follow-through changes. The bowler starts going wider on the crease to take load off the front knee. These are signals that no broadcast camera catches and no press conference mentions.

When a teammate watches that happen over years, through back injuries, stress fractures, long rehab stints, and the slow process of rebuilding pace, it creates a different kind of understanding. Ashwin is not speculating about what Bumrah’s body can handle. He watched the limits being tested and sometimes crossed.

That is why his workload opinion carries more weight than the average expert’s. When he says Bumrah should play only ODIs, it is not a hot take for content. It is a former teammate doing the maths on what he has seen, knowing what 150 kmph costs over a five-day match versus a 50-over game, and knowing that the margin between a fit Bumrah and an injured one is thinner than any outsider realizes.
