Ashwin MLC Knee Injury: Heading Home to Rehab Before Dublin Season

Cricket News

Ravichandran Ashwin signed up to play for San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket 2026. He played one match. He is now heading back to India to begin rehabilitation on his right knee. That is the full story of his MLC season.

The single appearance came on June 20 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. San Francisco Unicorns versus Texas Super Kings. Ashwin bowled two overs, conceded 24 runs, and did not take a wicket. His knee did not hold up for the rest of the tournament.

San Francisco Unicorns confirmed on July 9 that Ashwin has been ruled out of the remainder of MLC 2026 with a right knee injury.

“I’m disappointed to end the season early, but unfortunately this injury means that’s the right decision. I’ve truly loved my time with the San Francisco Unicorns and will be cheering the boys on for the rest of the tournament. Thank you to my teammates, the coaching staff, everyone across the San Francisco Unicorns organization, and all the Unicorns fans for your incredible support.”

Graham Manou, General Manager of Cricket Performance for the Unicorns, acknowledged what the franchise was losing.

“Losing a player of Ashwin’s quality and stature to a mid-season injury is naturally disappointing. Beyond his performances on the field, he has been an outstanding professional and a tremendous leader within our group. Ashwin has had a real impact on our entire team, and we wish him every success with his recovery.”

Insider Read:

Every ball a spinner bowls passes through the same chain in the body. The run-up loads the back. The coil of the action loads the shoulder. When the front foot lands at the crease, the knee takes the full transfer of body weight at the exact moment of release. For Ashwin bowling right-arm off-spin, that is the right knee absorbing not just the impact of the landing stride but the rotational force of the action driving through. He bowled two overs in Dallas. Not twenty. Two. But those two overs came after warm-up sessions, net practice, travel, and weeks of managing a knee that had already gone through surgery once.

What professionals understand is that surgery addresses the structural damage. It does not remove the load that caused the damage in the first place. A knee coming back from surgery needs two things before it can handle competitive bowling again: proper rehabilitation to restore movement, and strength work to rebuild the muscles that protect the joint. Without the strength phase, the joint carries too much on its own every time that foot lands. Every delivery loads the knee, the back, and the shoulder together. Miss the strength work and returning to bowling does not complete the recovery. It speeds up the next breakdown.

This is why two overs matters more than it sounds. And it is why going home now, protecting the knee before Dublin, is the right call.

Peter Siddle has been approved as Ashwin’s replacement for the remainder of the tournament. The experienced Australian has taken 221 Test wickets in 67 matches and had already featured for the Unicorns as cover for Xavier Bartlett and Aaron Hardie earlier in MLC 2026. Co-owner Anand Rajaraman said that bringing world-class cricketers and world-class people to the Bay Area had always been an ambition of the franchise, and that Ashwin had been both. Co-owner Venky Harinarayan confirmed to Indica News that Ashwin would not be staying on in any coaching capacity with the squad. CEO David White was equally brief: he is going to rehab.

San Francisco Unicorns are not in trouble without him. They sit at the top of the MLC points table with five wins from eight matches. Captain Matt Short has been the team’s leading wicket-taker all season, with rookie wristspinner Anirudh Immanuel and left-arm spin all-rounder Hassan Khan sharing the spin responsibilities in Ashwin’s absence.

The six weeks before the European T20 Premier League begins on August 26 are the story now. His role as captain and mentor of the Dublin Guardians was always built around leadership and presence rather than bowling returns. But he needs to be on the field for any of that to mean something. Getting there with a knee strong enough to carry a full tournament, not just two overs, is what the next six weeks are for.

San Francisco Unicorns posted the injury confirmation on their verified X account on July 9. Dublin Guardians have not made a public statement on Ashwin’s fitness at time of publication.
