Abhishek Sharma smashed 233 off 91 balls for Amritsar in the Punjab State Inter District Senior One Day Limited Overs Tournament 2026-27, hitting 25 sixes and 15 fours at a strike rate of 256.04. Playing against Tarn Taran Men’s Senior, he powered his team to 533/8 in 50 overs before being caught by Anikait Singh off Ashish Lowrance on the fourth ball of the 25th over.
Fellow opener Abhay Chaudhary contributed 93 off 85 balls, while SRH teammate and wicketkeeper Salil Arora made a quickfire 29 off 18 at No.4. Abhinav Sharma added 51 lower down the order.

The innings arrived after months of declining returns at international level. Abhishek was the No.1 ranked T20I batter in the world at the start of 2026, averaging 42.95 with a strike rate above 193 across 21 games the previous year. The same batter who smashed the fastest Indian T20I fifty against England has seen those numbers collapse to an average of 19.4 and a strike rate of 165 since the T20 World Cup.
In the T20 World Cup itself, he managed one fifty across the entire tournament, which came in the final against New Zealand, and was dismissed for ducks in three consecutive group stage matches. The Ireland series brought 49 runs from two games. The England tour produced 131 runs in five T20Is as India lost the series 0-4. Then came Zimbabwe, where Blessing Muzarabani dismissed him in all three matches for scores of 1, 8 and 2. Multiple analysts have pointed out specific weaknesses in his game that opposition bowlers are now targeting consistently.

Selection pressure mounts with Asian Games and West Indies series approaching
The 233 does not change what is happening around Abhishek in the India setup. Sanju Samson, who was dropped for the Zimbabwe tour despite winning Player of the Tournament during India’s T20 World Cup triumph, remains firmly in contention for a recall. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to push for a permanent opening spot after his explosive entry into international cricket. The competition for places at the top of the order is the most intense it has been in years.
Former India opener Kris Srikkanth did not hold back on his YouTube channel after the Zimbabwe series.
“Abhishek Sharma has been sorted out (by opponents) in international cricket, right from the World Cup. I think a tough call has to be taken against him now. He will receive a call back 100%. The selectors will have to take a tough call.”

Sunil Gavaskar has also weighed in on Abhishek’s position, suggesting that pressure is affecting his game. India’s next T20I assignment is the Asian Games in September, followed by a home series against West Indies in October. There is a real possibility of selectors moving on from Abhishek for the West Indies series, with Samson and Sooryavanshi likely to open.

District cricket and international cricket are two completely different games. A batter can score 500 in a district match and it will not change the fact that a Muzarabani or a Mark Wood is hitting 145 kph on a good length outside off stump. The bowling Abhishek faced in Amritsar is not testing the weaknesses that international attacks have identified and repeatedly exploited over the past six months. What this innings can do is give him free-flowing hands and a reminder of what scoring feels like. What it cannot do is simulate the pressure of facing a plan that has been set specifically for him, with fielders placed exactly where he scores. The runs are real. The confidence is welcome. But the problem he needs to solve is not one that district bowlers are asking him.
