Abhishek Sharma Breaks Suryakumar’s Record: Fastest to 2,000 T20I Runs by 140+ Balls

Abhishek Sharma is now the fastest batter in history to reach 2,000 T20I runs by balls faced. He got there in roughly 1,020 balls against West Indies in Indore on 11 October 2026. That beats Suryakumar Yadav’s record of 1,164 balls by about 140 deliveries.

Suryakumar had held the record since December 2023, when he reached 2,000 runs against South Africa.

Abhishek came into the third T20I needing 33 runs. He crossed the mark inside his first 15 balls and reached fifty off just 18, the same kind of start that produced his record T20I fifty against England.

India were 87/1 after six overs. Sanju Samson fell for 3 to Shamar Joseph, and the series was level at 1-1 coming into this match.

The scoreboard shows the record. What it does not show is the choice a batter faces when he is 33 runs short of history, and why Abhishek’s choice is rare.

Insider Read

Close to a milestone, everyone knows: the dressing room, the big screen, the commentators. Your head starts counting. Most batters slow down, push for singles and wait for the bad ball. That is usually when they get out, because they are batting against a number, not the bowler.

Abhishek was 21 off nine and kept swinging. He gave the bowlers no quiet phase to settle into. That is the hardest skill in T20 cricket: treating the 1,020th ball of a career like the first. Records come to batters who forget they are chasing them.

Fastest to 2,000 T20I Runs: The Full List

Batter Balls to 2,000
Abhishek Sharma ~1,024
Suryakumar Yadav 1,164

By innings, he is not the fastest. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan got there in 52 innings, Suryakumar and Virat Kohli in 56, KL Rahul in 58 and Aaron Finch in 62. Abhishek needed more innings than all of them.

Balls are what set him apart. His T20I strike rate was 194.94 coming into this match, and that pace put him on top.
