Albie Morkel has been appointed head coach of the Joburg Super Kings ahead of SA20 season 5. The former South Africa allrounder replaces Stephen Fleming, who left the Super Kings franchise earlier in July 2026 to take charge as England’s Test cricket coach.
Morkel has been part of the Joburg Super Kings coaching setup since the franchise entered the SA20 in its inaugural 2023 season. He steps into the top job after serving as an assistant coach across all four completed editions of the tournament. The appointment was confirmed by the franchise on Thursday, July 30.

The 44 year old represented South Africa in one Test, 58 ODIs and 50 T20Is between 2004 and 2015. Across 319 T20 matches in his career, he scored more than 4,000 runs and claimed nearly 250 wickets. That profile as a genuine allrounder across formats shaped his path into coaching.
Morkel’s coaching career began as assistant coach of the Namibia men’s national team after his retirement in January 2019. He then served as Bangladesh’s power-hitting coach on a short-term basis for their 2022 ODI series against South Africa, a role the Bangladesh Cricket Board created specifically to improve their batsmen’s boundary-hitting ability. Most recently, Morkel worked as a specialist consultant coach with the South African team at the 2026 T20 World Cup, where the Proteas reached the semi-finals. His brother Morne served as India’s bowling coach at the same tournament, putting the Morkel brothers on opposite sides of the dugout.
Morkel played for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL from 2008, contributing to their title wins in 2010 and 2011. In 78 IPL matches for CSK, he scored over 1,000 runs at a strike rate of 139.78 and took 76 wickets. That dual capability as a batting and bowling option in the death overs made him a fixture in the franchise’s golden era under MS Dhoni.

Joburg Super Kings Target First SA20 Final Under Morkel
Joburg Super Kings have not reached the SA20 final in four completed seasons. They finished fourth in the 2026 season with four wins and four losses from ten matches. Fleming coached the side across all four editions but could not guide them past the elimination stage.
Morkel’s first task is clear: get JSK to a final for the first time. The fifth SA20 season begins on January 17, 2027, with Joburg Super Kings opening their campaign against Paarl Royals on January 18.

The appointment follows a pattern the Super Kings franchise has maintained across its operations. Chennai Super Kings, Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings have historically promoted coaches who understand the franchise culture rather than hiring external names. Fleming himself had been the face of that system for 18 years before leaving for England. KS Viswanathan, Director of Joburg Super Kings, pointed to Morkel’s familiarity with the franchise as the decisive factor.
Fleming’s departure in July 2026 ended an 18-year association with the Super Kings franchise. He stepped down from Chennai Super Kings, Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings simultaneously before accepting the England Test coaching role.

The appointment of a former allrounder as a T20 franchise head coach is not just a title change. It shifts how coaching conversations happen in a dressing room.
Most franchise coaching setups are built in silos. A batting coach works with batters. A bowling coach works with bowlers. A fielding coach runs catching drills. The head coach sits above them and makes selection calls. When that head coach is a former specialist, whether a batter or a bowler, they instinctively lean towards one group. The conversations they initiate are weighted towards what they know best.
A former allrounder operates differently. Someone who has bowled the 19th over under pressure and then walked out to bat at number seven with 40 needed off 18 balls understands both sides of the critical moments that decide T20 matches. Morkel has been in positions where he needed to read a batter’s intent from the bowling crease and then, hours later, decode a bowler’s plan from the striker’s end. That dual perspective is rare in coaching.
In practical terms, this means Morkel can walk into a death bowling meeting and speak from experience about setting up a batter with a wide yorker before going at the stumps. He can then sit with the middle order and explain how a lower-order hitter should identify which bowler to target in the final five overs, because he has done both. The tactical overlap between disciplines is where T20 matches are won and lost, and a coach who has lived on both sides of that overlap does not need a translator.
His philosophy, described during the T20 World Cup as “take the pressure off, not add to it,” also reflects how allrounders experience the game. Allrounders carry dual responsibility in every match. They learn early that overthinking either role creates tension that destroys performance. Morkel’s approach of reducing pressure rather than piling it on comes directly from managing two separate skill sets under match conditions for over a decade. A specialist rarely faces that particular kind of mental load.
For Joburg Super Kings, this means a head coach who will not compartmentalise his squad into batting and bowling groups when the game situation demands crossover thinking. In the death overs of a T20 chase or a T20 defence, the margins are decided by players who can read both sides of the contest. Albie Morkel is one of the few coaches in franchise cricket who has genuinely done that at the highest level.
