Temba Bavuma will be 37 when South Africa host the 2027 Cricket World Cup. At the CWC27 venue reveal event on August 5, the South Africa captain did not call the tournament a target or a plan. He called it a “dream.” For a player who has suffered six significant injuries since the 2023 World Cup, that word carries more weight than it appears.
“I’ll be 37 by then. So as much as there’s the physical preparation that I’ll have to do, but it’s also from a mental point of view. To be able to deal with everything that comes with it but I think at the moment it’s quite a lot that still needs to happen to get there. So it’s still a dream at the back of my head. But I soldier on towards it and just keep winning those daily steps.”

The ICC posted Bavuma’s remarks on their verified X account on August 5, 2026. No additional CSA statement on his fitness outlook has been made at time of publication.
A right hamstring strain during the 2023 World Cup group stage against Afghanistan nearly ended his tournament. He played the semi-final against Australia not fully fit. South Africa lost.
Six weeks later, his left hamstring failed during the Boxing Day Test against India. In October 2024, he re-injured his left elbow during an ODI against Ireland and has batted with heavy strapping since. Before the WTC final in June 2025, another elbow issue ruled him out of the Lions’ domestic final.
At Lord’s, he pulled his hamstring for the third time in two years while batting on 6, refused to leave, and scored 66 in the match-winning chase against Australia. He was ruled out of the Zimbabwe Tests that followed. By September 2025, a calf strain during the England ODI series sidelined him for six to eight weeks. ESPNcricinfo’s Firdose Moonda noted at the time that Bavuma “may not be fit enough to play through” CWC27 given his injury record.
Insider Read:
“Dream” is not the word a captain uses when he expects to be there. When Shubman Gill talked about the same tournament, he set a target. Bavuma chose “dream.” That is a different register entirely.
“Soldier on” is endurance language. It describes suffering through something, not racing toward it. And “daily steps” is rehabilitation vocabulary. Players recovering from soft tissue injuries talk about daily steps. Players in full flight talk about preparation, plans, goals. Bavuma’s phrasing belongs to the first category, not the second.
The ICC framed these quotes as determination. What Bavuma actually said was closer to hope.
Can Bavuma’s Body Last a Six-Week World Cup at 37?
The WTC final at Lord’s showed what Bavuma does when his body fails during a match. He stays.
“I didn’t want to think of another option. I didn’t want to consider myself not being there with Aiden. It was a key moment within the game. I wasn’t at 100% fitness but I felt that I was good enough to still do the job.”

But one Test is not a World Cup. CWC27 will stretch across six to eight weeks and 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Bavuma himself referenced his 2023 experience in India as a “taste” of what a six-to-eight-week tournament demands.
CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe has acknowledged that Bavuma’s injury record is a “concern” but stated the captain retains the board’s full backing for CWC27, according to SA Cricket magazine. Shukri Conrad, who took over as all-format coach in May 2025 with his contract running through CWC27, originally proposed Bavuma for the Test captaincy. How Conrad manages Bavuma’s workload over the next 14 months will determine whether “dream” becomes something more concrete.
Bavuma told TimesLive at the venue launch that there is already “anxiety about whether individuals will be there or not.” Given everything his body has been through since 2023, the question of Bavuma’s fitness for a home World Cup at 37 is no longer hypothetical. It is the story.
