India head coach Gautam Gambhir has set a clear standard for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa: no player goes in without match rhythm.
“You can’t go to the World Cup half-cooked. So you must have enough game time and your rhythm should be good enough, because there are no ifs and buts when it comes to a World Cup.”

Jasprit Bumrah has played two ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final. Both came against England in July 2026, and the second ended with a knee injury.

Hardik Pandya’s lack of cricket drew most of the attention, and Gambhir has set Hardik one clear condition for ODIs. But he put Bumrah in the same bracket.
“Whether it’s Hardik or Jasprit Bumrah, they are going to be extremely important for us in (South) Africa.”

Gambhir said the thinking on Bumrah is how much one-day cricket India can make him play, with Test cricket equally important. Finding the right balance of workload and game time, he said, will be critical.
The numbers show how far Bumrah is from ODI rhythm. What they cannot show is why the T20 overs he is bowling right now do not close that gap.
Bumrah’s ODI Plan vs Reality
In March 2026, a BCCI source told Deccan Chronicle that Bumrah would play more ODIs than T20Is before the World Cup, with around 30 to 35 games ahead. Between the 2023 final and that report, he had played 21 Tests, 21 T20Is and no ODIs.
Six months later, his ODI count is two.
| When | Match or event | Bumrah |
|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 1st ODI vs England, Birmingham | Played, 1/31 |
| July 2026 | 2nd ODI vs England, Cardiff | Played, 1/45. Impact injury to left knee while fielding |
| July 2026 | 3rd ODI vs England, Lord’s | Ruled out with reactive swelling in the knee |
| August 2026 | Two Tests in Sri Lanka | Ruled out, still recovering |
| September 2026 | Three T20Is vs Afghanistan | Played all three |
| 24 Sep to 3 Oct 2026 | Asian Games T20 event, Japan | In the squad |
| From 27 Sep 2026 | Three ODIs vs West Indies | Not picked because of the Asian Games overlap |
The knee injury cost him the Sri Lanka Tests, where Auqib Nabi replaced Bumrah. The West Indies absence is a scheduling clash, not a selection call. Mohammed Siraj takes his place for the West Indies ODIs.
His next ODI chances this year are five matches on the New Zealand tour (22 October to 1 December) and three at home against Sri Lanka in December. Even if he plays all eight, he finishes 2026 with ten ODIs since November 2023.
Insider Read
An ODI asks a fast bowler for ten overs in three spells, long stretches of fielding in between, and a last spell at the death when the legs are heaviest. Neither Tests nor T20s ask for that pattern. The body only learns it in matches, because nets cannot copy cooling down at fine leg for half an hour and then bowling flat out again.
A four-over T20 spell keeps Bumrah sharp but asks nothing of him after 20 overs, and a Test spell builds volume at a slower rhythm with time to reset. That is why Gambhir’s word was rhythm. Bumrah can be fully fit in Japan and still arrive in New Zealand short of it.
