Jos Buttler named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the player most likely to break his all-time T20 run-scoring record, moments after becoming the highest run-scorer in the history of men’s T20 cricket on August 5, 2026.
“It’s really cool actually. To think you’ve got the most T20 runs out of anyone. Someone will surpass it one day, and his name’s probably Sooryavanshi. But no, it’s a proud moment.”
Jos Buttler, post-match interview with Sky Sports Cricket, August 5, 2026
Buttler reached the milestone during Manchester Super Giants’ nine-wicket win over Welsh Fire in The Hundred 2026 at Emirates Old Trafford. Needing 21 runs to pass Kieron Pollard’s tally of 14,803, Buttler launched South Africa pacer Marco Jansen for three consecutive sixes. The first of those sixes took him past Pollard. He finished unbeaten on 51 off 20 balls, hitting six sixes in total at a strike rate of 255.00, as Manchester Super Giants chased down 156 with 31 balls to spare.
Buttler’s career T20 tally now stands at 14,833 runs from 522 matches, including nine centuries and 106 fifties. Pollard accumulated his 14,803 runs across 746 matches. Chris Gayle sits third with 14,562.
The 35-year-old had hoped to break the record while Pollard was present in the dugout during a previous fixture against MI London. That did not happen. Instead, the milestone came against Welsh Fire, with Buttler recently named stand-in captain after Aiden Markram was ruled out for the rest of the season.
A special shoutout to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 🙌

Insider Read:
Buttler’s choice of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi carries weight because it comes from experience, not hype. He shared a dressing room with the teenager at Rajasthan Royals, kept wicket while watching him dominate IPL knockouts, and has repeatedly spoken about how calmly he handles extraordinary expectations at just 15. That makes his prediction more than a passing compliment. The challenge, however, is not talent but opportunity. Buttler reached 14,833 T20 runs by playing across multiple global leagues, while Indian players are largely limited to the IPL, domestic T20s, and internationals. Sooryavanshi has the ability, but whether India’s cricket calendar gives him enough matches to chase that record remains the biggest obstacle.
Can Sooryavanshi actually break this record?
Sooryavanshi has 1,670 runs from 40 T20 matches at an average of 42.82 and a strike rate of 216.32. He has four T20 centuries, eight fifties, and 148 sixes. He is 15 years old.
The numbers at this stage are extraordinary. But the path to 14,833 runs is not straightforward for an Indian player. Buttler built his tally across the IPL, The Hundred, the Big Bash League, the Caribbean Premier League, and international cricket. Pollard played 746 matches across every major T20 league in the world. Gayle did the same.
Indian players are restricted to one franchise league. The IPL runs 14 to 16 matches per season. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy adds a handful more. T20 internationals provide another window, but even with India’s packed schedule, the annual match count for an Indian batter is far lower than what a globe-trotting freelancer can accumulate.
Virat Kohli, India’s highest T20 run-scorer, has 14,218 runs from 420 T20 matches. It took him close to two decades to reach that figure. Kohli played under the same BCCI restrictions. If Sooryavanshi maintains his current average and plays roughly 30 to 35 T20 matches per year, reaching Buttler’s record would take over a decade of sustained, injury-free performance.
Buttler’s prediction may be right about the talent. Whether the structure of Indian cricket allows Sooryavanshi enough matches to actually get there is a different question entirely.
