Dinesh Karthik had already played for India when he first shared a dressing room with MS Dhoni on the India A squad in 2004. Karthik was the established wicketkeeper. Dhoni was the newcomer nobody noticed.
“Before MS Dhoni made his India debut, I had already played for India and had also been with him in India A. He was quiet, soft-spoken and very different from other cricketers. He even loved bowling in the nets. I didn’t see anything extraordinary in him then. But when he played in Kenya and became Player of the Series, everyone started talking about his power-hitting. That’s when I realised there was something special about Dhoni.”

Karthik debuted for India in September 2004 against England. Dhoni debuted three months later against Bangladesh. Both were on the India A squad for the Kenya Triangular Tournament that same year, competing for the same position.
Dhoni did not bat much in the nets. He preferred rolling his arm over at medium pace. He was shy, kept to himself, and showed none of the explosive aggression that would later define his career.
Then Kenya happened. Dhoni hit the ball with a power nobody in that squad had seen before. People in the dressing room started comparing his six-hitting to Gary Sobers before Dhoni had even played a single international match.
Dhoni Bowled to His Own Competitor
Aakash Chopra, Dhoni’s roommate on that tour, has told a story that captures exactly who Dhoni was before fame arrived. Dhoni would bowl to Karthik in the nets. Not bat. Bowl. To the man directly competing with him for the wicketkeeper’s spot.
Chopra told Dhoni this made no sense and advised him to stop bowling to his competitor and focus on batting instead.
“See, Aakash bhai, I will bowl because I love bowling. If you want to bat, you can do that as well. Please don’t tell me I shouldn’t bowl,” Dhoni told Chopra.
Chopra described the young Dhoni as extremely shy. His phone rang constantly but he never answered it. He ate daal-roti and slept early. He was so accommodating that he ate vegetarian for an entire month to match Chopra’s diet, even though he was non-vegetarian himself.
Once Dhoni got his chance in Kenya, Chopra saw things he had never witnessed. Dhoni reverse-swept a fast Pakistani bowler for four at fine leg, then smashed the next delivery for six over third man. Two shots that did not exist in anyone else’s playbook.
“When Dhoni came in, he took the complete country by storm and I knew that door was closed,” Karthik said. “Keeper-batsman is always a decade-long job. Dhoni was a once-in-a-generation kind of cricketer.”
Karthik described his own role with a line that carries more weight than it appears to: “I stepped in briefly like a guest appearance in a movie, but the lead role was always meant for Dhoni.”

Karthik was the better-credentialed player in 2004. He had the India cap, the runs, the position. The man who would take all of it from him was happily bowling medium pace in the nets, not even trying to stake his claim.
Dhoni did not outwork Karthik in practice. He did not outmanoeuvre him politically. He showed up in a match in Kenya and hit the ball harder than anyone had ever seen. No amount of net sessions or domestic runs could have prepared Karthik for that. “I became a bit like a chameleon,” Karthik said. Opening in Tamil Nadu, batting middle order for India, constantly shifting shapes to find a way into a team where the one position he was born to play was permanently taken. The chameleon survived for 20 years in international cricket. But the door that Dhoni closed in Kenya never opened again.
