England have handed out a record 39 contracts for 2026/27: 30 central deals and nine development deals. The biggest surprise is in the length of the deals, not the names.
Henry Crocombe, who has never played for England, gets two years. Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith, two senior Test players, get one. Zak Crawley is off the list, along with Ben Stokes and Mark Wood after their retirements.
On paper it is a list of names and dates. In a dressing room, the date next to your name says more than any selector will tell you to your face.
Duckett and Smith’s deals run to 30 September 2027. Rob Key, the ECB’s managing director of men’s cricket, said the call was not made lightly.
“Yeah, we debated and deliberated long and hard about those types of things.”

A contract is the first selection meeting a player hears about. Before anyone names an XI, the length of your deal tells you how far ahead the selectors can see you. Two years means they have planned around you. One year means they want to watch first.
For Duckett and Smith, that changes the South Africa tour. Every innings now carries two scores: the one on the board and the one being kept for September 2027. The good ones turn that into an edge. The danger is a batter who starts playing for the contract instead of the team, and leaves the ball he would normally hit.

The graphic misses one name from the two-year group: Harry Brook, the white-ball captain, is also tied down to September 2028.
| Deal | Players |
|---|---|
| Two years (to Sept 2028) | Root, Brook, Archer, Atkinson, Bethell, Baker, Cox, Crocombe, Curran, Jacks, Tongue |
| One year (to Sept 2027) | Rehan Ahmed, Banton, Bashir, Buttler, Carse, Cook, Dawson, Duckett, Fisher, Gay, Lawrence, Mahmood, Overton, Pope, Potts, Rashid, Robinson, Salt, Jamie Smith |
| Development (to Sept 2027) | Coles, Crane, Hull, Eddie Jack, McKinney, Patterson-White, Rew, Revis, Stanley |
| Off the list | Stokes (retired), Mark Wood (retired), Crawley, Luke Wood, Tom Lawes (development) |
Crocombe is the first England player to sign a multi-year deal before an international appearance. He took back-to-back hat-tricks for Sussex this summer, finished with 40 Championship wickets at 23.52, and is moving to Surrey.
Crawley’s deal was not renewed after he averaged 27.30 in the Ashes. Emilio Gay has taken his place as Test opener.
Ollie Robinson returns for the first time since 2023, after 28 wickets at under 10 in four Tests against New Zealand and Pakistan this summer. Tom Banton, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Matt Fisher, Gay and Dan Lawrence also get their first central deals.
Ollie Pope and Shoaib Bashir keep one-year deals despite losing their Test places. Brydon Carse stays on the second year of his deal while the Cricket Regulator’s charge over his August arrest in Derby is resolved.
Thomas Rew, 18, is the youngest player on the list. James Coles and Mason Crane are among the nine development players.
Crocombe could debut in the ODI tri-series in Pakistan, which starts on 18 October. Duckett and Smith’s first test under the new terms is South Africa, a three-Test series from 17 December and Stephen Fleming’s first as Test head coach.
