Sunil Gavaskar called Tilak Varma’s run-out “school boy stuff” on air during India’s third T20I against West Indies in Indore on Sunday. India’s vice-captain was out for 28 off 16 balls after celebrating a boundary that never came.
Gavaskar’s point was simple: a batter gets back to safety before anything else. He has pushed India on basics before, calling for average fielders to be dropped.
Most replays showed a two-man mix-up. The shot went behind square, which made it Tilak’s call, and that changes who carries the blame.
On the fourth ball of the 17th over, Gudakesh Motie bowled a low full toss. Axar Patel flicked it towards deep backward square leg, and Kamil Pooran dived to his left to stop it just inside the rope.
The batters ran one, met mid-pitch and bumped fists, sure it was four. Both walked back towards their original ends. Shai Hope broke the stumps at the keeper’s end, but Axar made his ground.
The ball went to Motie, who broke the stumps at the bowler’s end with Tilak well short. The third umpire checked the boundary save first, then gave Tilak out. Gautam Gambhir looked unimpressed in the dugout.

Gavaskar did not hold back.
“What was Tilak Varma doing there? You can’t take things so casually. When we start batting, this is the first thing coaches tell you, to stay in the crease, always reach to your safe position first. It was a school boy stuff from Tilak Varma. You are an experienced batter in the side, and this sort of casual approach is totally unacceptable. He should have done a lot better there.”

Insider Read
Running between the wickets has one rule every batter learns young. The striker calls for anything in front of square. The non-striker calls for anything behind it. Axar’s flick went to deep backward square leg, so from the moment it left the bat, it was Tilak’s ball to watch and Tilak’s call to make.
Axar was running with the shot behind him. Tilak was the only batter facing Pooran’s dive. A boundary is a boundary only when the umpire signals it, and until then the non-striker keeps watching with his bat in the crease. Tilak walked to mid-pitch to celebrate instead. That is the safe position Gavaskar was talking about.
What the Run-Out Cost India
Tilak had hit four boundaries and was set for the death overs. India still reached 223, with Abhishek Sharma top-scoring with 69 off 30 balls.
West Indies finished on 209/7. India won by 14 runs, with Arshdeep Singh taking 3/44, and lead the five-match series 2-1. The margin covered the mistake this time.
