India’s Bowling Gap Exposed: How West Indies Chased 250 in Ranchi

West Indies chased down 250 against India in Ranchi on 9 October with nine balls to spare. Shai Hope’s unbeaten 102 off 45 balls powered their highest T20I chase, and the second-highest successful chase in T20I history.

India’s frontline bowlers were not alone in leaking runs. Axar Patel, Shivam Dube and Naman Dhir bowled 7.5 overs between them and gave away 118. Mayank Yadav, the only bowler to strike more than once, finished with 3/36 and was given just three overs.

It was the second time on this tour that West Indies ran down a huge total, after their record 352 chase in the third ODI against India’s bowling. The six-wicket defeat levelled the five-match series 1-1 and ended India’s 10-match T20I winning streak.

Vikrant Gupta, who has questioned India’s bowling and dressing room before, framed this as a strategy failure, not a bad night.

“249 रन बनाकर जश्न मना रहा था India पर WI ने भारत की White Ball Strategy की पोल खोल दी”

India were celebrating after making 249, but West Indies exposed India’s white-ball strategy.

The scorecard shows where the runs leaked. It does not show the price a captain pays when he picks bowlers for their batting.

When you pick an XI to bat deep, you are also picking overs you do not trust. In Ranchi, India’s Nos. 8 to 11 never walked out to bat. That batting cover went unused, and the overs that came with it had to be bowled anyway.

A wet ball takes away the slower ball and the cutter first, so an all-rounder is left feeding pace onto the bat. The captain then has to choose: spend his strike bowler early chasing wickets, or keep him for the end. Mayank’s fourth over was never bowled. That is the strategy Ranchi exposed.

What India Blamed, and How Hope Replied

India’s captain pointed straight at the conditions.

“When the dew factor comes in, it plays a massive role. You cannot give a number.”

The head coach gave the same reason.

“We know that flat wickets with the dew, obviously it’s tough.”

Hope added 120 with Sherfane Rutherford, who made 84 off 37. It followed his unbeaten 162 in that third ODI chase, the innings he linked to advice from MS Dhoni. His reply to India came in two words.

“250? Cool.”
