Mumbai Indians have denied involvement in any player trade discussions for the second time in two months, using stronger language than their first denial in July. The franchise spokesperson told Sportstar on August 1 that no conversations about player trades are happening and that the post-season review must be completed first.

Contrary to reports, we are not engaged in conversations with regard to player trades, the same is only possible once the review is complete. This is not the first time MI have made this statement. In early July, a spokesperson told RevSportz that the franchise had “just begun” its review and was “not engaged in conversations with regard to player trades.” The August 1 version adds two words that were absent in July: “contrary to reports.” That addition signals MI felt the need to directly push back against what had been published in the weeks between the two statements.
What was published is specific. According to Hindustan Times, Mumbai Indians demanded Shivam Dube and Ayush Mhatre from Chennai Super Kings in exchange for Hardik Pandya. CSK reportedly refused to part with Mhatre and counter-offered Dube, Dewald Brevis, and INR 10 crore in cash. These are not vague rumours. They are detailed deal structures with named players and specific figures.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan also denied the reports separately, telling Cricbuzz in early July that no decision had been made and that any discussions would only happen after the Major League Cricket season, where CSK’s management was occupied with the Texas Super Kings franchise.
The denials from both sides came even as PTI reported in late May that Pandya had already told MI’s management he would not be staying. According to a tournament source quoted by PTI, the decision was conveyed mid-season.

Reports have named at least seven franchises interested in acquiring Pandya, according to Times of India. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad have reportedly stayed out of the race. CSK, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals are among those monitoring the situation.
MI’s Post-Season Review and What It Actually Covers
Mumbai Indians’ review extends well beyond the Mumbai Indians player trade question around Pandya. According to multiple reports, the franchise is evaluating its leadership structure, coaching staff, and overall cricket operations. A TOI report from mid-July stated that the biggest call would be the leadership choice between Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma as the next captain.
Each member of the coaching staff, led by head coach Mahela Jayawardene, has reportedly been asked to submit a performance report on the IPL 2026 campaign. These reports are being reviewed before any squad decisions, including trades, are finalized.
Pandya returned to MI ahead of IPL 2024 in an all-cash trade from Gujarat Titans for INR 15 crore, replacing Rohit Sharma as captain. Since then, MI have finished 10th (2024), 4th (2025), and 9th (2026). The franchise has not won the IPL title since 2020, its longest drought in the tournament’s history.
