The claim that Ravi Shastri is set to replace Ajit Agarkar as BCCI’s chief selector is still circulating on social media as of July 2026. Reels are going up treating it as live news. It was not true when it first spread, and it is not true now.

This claim is being circulated by unofficial cricket accounts on Instagram. No official statement from Ravi Shastri or the BCCI supports this. No official response to these posts has been made at time of publication.
The BCCI settled this matter in April 2026. Ajit Agarkar’s contract was officially renewed until June 2027. A senior BCCI source confirmed the renewal to PTI, and the wording used was precise.
“Agarkar didn’t seek extension. A selector can continue up to four years in either junior or senior selection committee and five years cumulatively across both committees. Hence Ajit’s contract is being renewed and not extended.”

This is not an exceptional favour to Agarkar. Under BCCI rules, a selector who has not yet served the maximum allowed term simply continues. He had room left. The board chose to use it.
Shastri had already addressed the speculation months before that confirmation. On October 23, 2025, he was directly asked about the chief selector rumours in an interview with SportsNext on News18. He dismissed it on air.
Even the successor speculation had moved on well before BCCI made it official. Reports in March 2026 named Zaheer Khan as the frontrunner to replace Agarkar, with discussions said to be underway between Khan and the board. Harbhajan Singh was also reportedly interested. Parthiv Patel was later named by The Times of India as another strong candidate. None of it became relevant once Agarkar’s contract was renewed.
The reason BCCI stayed with Agarkar is not complicated. Under his watch, India won three consecutive ICC titles: the T20 World Cup 2024, the Champions Trophy 2025, and the T20 World Cup 2026. India also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. His panel has also been willing to make uncomfortable calls, with Sanju Samson’s Zimbabwe omission being one of the more prominent examples during his tenure.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia now the only target that matters, the BCCI has no reason to change a setup that has delivered at every tournament. The 2026 renewal places Agarkar alongside Kris Srikkanth, Sandeep Patil, and MSK Prasad as one of the longest-serving chief selectors in BCCI history at four years.
Ravi Shastri is in the commentary box. Ajit Agarkar is in the selection chair, and he stays there until at least June 2027.
