Steve Smith equalled Joe Root’s all-time record of 218 Test catches on Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, reaching the milestone in 42 fewer matches than the England batter. Smith has 218 catches in 124 Tests. Root reached the same number in 166.
The identical number at the top of the all-time list for non-wicketkeeper catches masks a significant difference in how each player got there. Smith’s rate of accumulation has no parallel among the fielders who have reached this level.
Smith took all three catches at second slip on Day 2, each off the second new ball. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood each produced an edge, and Smith held every one. Three catches in a single spell took him from 215 to 218, drawing him level with Root’s record.

The catches came during Australia’s only sustained spell of pressure on a day that otherwise belonged to Bangladesh. Tanzid Hasan scored a maiden Test century in just his second Test, batting over five hours across a patient 197-ball stay. Bangladesh reached 351 for 6 at stumps, leading by 153 runs after Hasan Mahmud’s career-best 6 for 55 had bowled Australia out for 198 on the opening day. Smith’s 71 was the only innings of real substance in that first-day collapse.
Smith had needed fortune to be on the field at all. Tanzid dropped him at third slip when he was on 2 on Day 1. A caught-behind appeal off Ebadot Hossain followed when Smith was on 7, with DRS showing no spike despite Smith later admitting he believed he had made contact. He described himself as lucky in his post-day press conference and said technology had saved him.

Smith averages 1.76 catches per Test across his career. Root averages 1.31. Over a full career, that difference is the gap between a fielder who contributes in the cordon and one whose presence defines the cordon itself.
Smith has been Australia’s regular second slip fielder across a long stretch of his career. He stands there for every pace bowler and rarely rotates out of position. His partnerships with specific bowlers show what that permanence produces: 62 catches off Nathan Lyon, 27 off Cummins, 26 off Starc, and 23 off Hazlewood. Those four bowlers account for more than half of Smith’s career catches. That kind of repetition, standing in the same spot for the same settled Australian bowling group year after year, builds anticipation that rotation simply cannot replicate.
Root fields in the slip cordon for England, but his 218 catches are spread across more bowling partnerships and more team configurations. The consistency of reaching 218 is exceptional. The rate separates them. When two players share an identical all-time record and one reached it 42 Tests faster, the raw number tells one story and the rate tells another. Smith’s catching has not been a useful bonus alongside his batting. It has been a structural part of how Australia fields.
From Galle to Darwin: The Path to 218
Smith reached 200 catches during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in February 2025. That made him the first Australian non-wicketkeeper to reach the milestone, putting him alongside Jacques Kallis on the all-time list. He had already surpassed Ricky Ponting’s Australian record of 196 earlier in the same series. At that point, Rahul Dravid held the all-time record at 210, with Root second on 207.
Root overtook Dravid during England’s home series against India in mid-2025. He equalled the Indian great at 210 during the first Test at Headingley in June, then took a diving one-handed catch at Lord’s in July to move to 211 and break the all-time record. Root extended his tally through the 2025-26 Ashes in Australia, reaching 218.
By the final Ashes Test at the SCG in January 2026, Smith had reached 215. The Darwin Test was his first since then. He entered it three catches short and took all three on Day 2.
The all-time list for most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Test cricket now stands at Smith and Root tied at 218, Dravid third at 210, Mahela Jayawardene fourth at 205, and Kallis fifth at 200. Both Smith and Root remain active at 37 and 35. The record could shift in either direction before either career ends.
