John Turner Retires at 25: A Live Contract, a Degree, and a Back That Gave Out

Cricket News

John Turner has retired from professional cricket at 25 with two years still remaining on his Hampshire contract. The England fast bowler, who played four internationals in 2024, walked away from the game on August 6 after a back stress fracture kept him out of all competitive cricket for over a year.

Turner took 97 wickets in 53 matches for Hampshire across all formats. He joined the county in 2021 after impressing at a trial, and his first professional wicket was Alastair Cook, caught at mid-wicket in a One-Day Cup match. His breakthrough came in the 2023 T20 Blast, where he took 21 wickets at an average of 11.76 with an economy of 6.67. On his Blast debut against Middlesex, he took a wicket with his first ball.

Those numbers earned him an England call-up just 70 days after his T20 debut. He was selected for the T20 series against New Zealand in August 2023 but had to pull out through injury. His international debut finally came in October 2024 on England’s tour of the West Indies, where he played two ODIs and two T20Is, taking three wickets. He dismissed Brandon King with his fourth ball in international cricket and later removed West Indies captain Rovman Powell in his T20I debut.

Turner signed a new Hampshire deal running to 2027 while already injured. He held an ECB development contract until late 2025. He has an economics and finance degree from the University of Exeter. When a 25-year-old fast bowler with a live contract, a national board development deal, and a professional qualification outside cricket decides the game is over, the injury has already made the decision for him. That combination tells you the stress fracture was not a setback he could manage. It was a verdict. Players who see any path back do not walk away from guaranteed contracts. Turner clearly did not see one.

What Turner’s Back Injury Meant for His Future

Turner’s last competitive match was in the 2025 Vitality Blast against Surrey at Utilita Bowl. A back stress fracture ended his season and, as it turned out, his career. He did not play any cricket from June 2025 onwards. England’s fast bowling depth has been a recurring concern, and losing a bowler who averaged 11.76 in T20 cricket at 25 adds to that problem.

“I have, however, decided to retire from the game, and as you can imagine, this has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make. The stress fracture, which has sidelined me for over a year, as well as my injury record, naturally made me think of my future both as a cricketer and away from the game, and subsequently, I decided now was the right time to pursue my next challenge.”

Back stress fractures in fast bowlers occur in the L4 and L5 vertebrae due to repeated extension, rotation, and side-bending loads during the bowling action. Research shows that up to 15 to 30 percent of elite junior fast bowlers suffer these injuries, and conditioning and workload management are central factors in whether a young pacer’s body survives the demands of professional cricket. Cricket Australia has stated that a fast bowler’s body only matures at 25. Turner’s back was already breaking down through his early twenties, well before his body had the chance to fully mature.

“John is an exceptionally talented player, and all of Hampshire Cricket is saddened that his journey in the professional game has come to an end. He has played a huge part in a successful period in Hampshire’s history over the past five years, reaching four T20 Finals Days, challenging at the top of Division One in the County Championship, and making the final of the One-Day Cup twice.”
