Jacob Bethell Ruled Out of The Hundred With Knee Injury as England Captaincy Concern Deepens

Cricket News

Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of The Hundred with a right knee injury, placing his availability for England’s Test series against Pakistan in serious doubt.

“Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of The Hundred due to a right knee injury. He sustained the injury during the Metro Bank ODI Series and had an MRI scan yesterday morning.”

ECB statement, July 21, 2026

Bethell scored 91 in the third ODI against India at Lord’s on Sunday the match in which the knee problem emerged. He had been retained by Birmingham Phoenix at £340,000 and named captain for the 2026 Hundred season, replacing Liam Livingstone who moved to London Spirit.

Donovan Ferreira, the South African all-rounder, has been named as his replacement captain. Shane Bond’s Phoenix side open their Hundred campaign against the Trent Rockets on Friday.

“It’s frustrating to miss out on The Hundred, especially representing Birmingham Phoenix in front of our supporters at Edgbaston. Unfortunately, I need to take the time to get back to full fitness. My focus now is on completing my rehabilitation and returning fully fit. I’d like to thank the fans, my teammates and the medical staff for all their support, and I’ll be cheering the boys on throughout the competition.”

The injury arrives at one of the most uncertain moments English cricket has faced in years. Ben Stokes retired from all cricket earlier this month. Brendon McCullum was removed as Test head coach on July 12. England are searching for both a permanent captain and a new head coach ahead of a three-Test series against Pakistan beginning on August 19, with no recovery timeline given for Bethell.

More Than a Missed Tournament

Insider Read:

Two significant injuries in 18 months is a pattern England cannot afford to ignore. Bethell suffered a left hamstring tear in February 2025 that ruled him out of the Champions Trophy. He now has a right knee injury at 22. These are two different injury sites, which points less to a specific mechanical fault and more to the volume of cricket he is absorbing across county cricket, IPL, international fixtures in all three formats, and now franchise commitments, without adequate recovery between them. England need to look at that workload before the Pakistan Tests, not after.

The loss of the Hundred captaincy carries its own cost. Captaining England in a bilateral T20 series in Ireland is a controlled environment: your own players, lower stakes, a dressing room that already respects you. A Hundred franchise is different. You have international players from multiple countries who owe you nothing. Games can shift in 10 balls. A full crowd at Edgbaston watches every decision in real time. That is the environment that tests whether a young captain can hold a room under pressure, manage a bowling attack in the final five balls, and stay clear-headed when the game is on the line. That experience was supposed to shape Bethell this summer. He does not get that test now.

England now head into the Pakistan Test series without a permanent head coach, without a confirmed Test captain, and potentially without their best candidate for the number three batting position. Bethell made 74 in his last red-ball outing at Trent Bridge against New Zealand. He is not someone England can easily replace.
