Alzarri Joseph has declined selection for West Indies’ two-Test home series against Pakistan, with head coach Daren Sammy publicly revealing that Cricket West Indies has no effective response to a contracted player refusing national duty.

Speaking two days before the opening Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Sammy contradicted the official CWI position. When naming the squad, Cricket West Indies stated that Joseph was unavailable due to “personal reasons.” Sammy used a different word entirely.
“He was selected. I mean, he’s now coming back from injury. And for reasons known to him, he has declined the selection.”

Declined. Not unavailable. Not rested. Not injured. Sammy used that word three times in the same press conference while the board’s official statement had not used it once.
Joseph had just returned from a long injury absence. A lower-back problem ruled him out of West Indies’ tours of India and New Zealand and kept him away from the T20 World Cup in January 2026. He came back for the Sri Lanka Tests in June and July, taking six wickets across two matches, then produced figures of 4/41 in the opening ODI against New Zealand. Cricket West Indies also granted him a No Objection Certificate to play in PSL 2026 during his recovery. Joseph is not too unfit to play cricket. He declined to play for West Indies.

Either way, Sammy is telling the world in front of cameras that his board needs to fix this. A head coach does not say that lightly.

CricTracker reported Sammy’s confirmation on their verified X account on July 24, 2026. Cricket West Indies has not publicly addressed the contradiction between its squad announcement and Sammy’s comments at time of publication.
Joseph’s absence leaves a significant gap at the top of West Indies’ pace attack in a series with direct WTC implications. Both West Indies and Pakistan sit at the bottom of the World Test Championship standings, with West Indies eighth and Pakistan ninth. West Indies have won just one of their previous ten Tests; Pakistan have lost 12 of their last 16.
The pace department will be led by Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales, with all-rounders Justin Greaves and Keemo Paul providing additional seam options. Joshua Bishop earns his maiden Test call-up after strong domestic performances, while Kirk McKenzie returns to the squad for the first time since 2024.

The opening Test begins July 26 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba. The second Test starts August 2 at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain. Alzarri Joseph has made no public statement on his decision.
