A Tamil cricket YouTube host has suggested Chennai Super Kings should have traded Jamie Overton and Hardik Pandya to bring Ben Stokes back to the franchise. The proposal sounds like a CSK fan’s dream on paper. It falls apart the moment you check IPL regulations.

Translation: “If I were at CSK, I’d have given these two players and gone all out to get Ben Stokes. Ben Stokes, Jamie Overton, Hardik Pandya.”
The suggestion is not isolated. Former CSK batter S Badrinath recently designed a dream CSK playing XII for IPL 2027 that included Stokes, Pandya, and Overton all in the same side.
“It’ll be a dream situation for CSK if they can land Hardik and get Ben Stokes. CSK should trade Shivam Dube for Hardik as an all-rounder swap.”

Badrinath’s proposed XII had Stokes and Pandya completing a top seven after Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, and Dewald Brevis, with Overton as one of the final four bowlers and MS Dhoni as Impact Player.
The idea of stacking three all-rounders at CSK is circulating in Tamil cricket circles. But two fundamental problems make it impossible for IPL 2027.
First, Hardik Pandya is not a CSK player. He is retained by Mumbai Indians at Rs 16.35 crore. CSK and MI have reportedly been in trade talks, with MI demanding Shivam Dube and Ayush Mhatre in exchange. CSK counter-offered Dube, Brevis, and Rs 10 crore in cash. MI then asked for an additional Rs 10 crore. The deal reportedly collapsed. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has denied any formal talks.
Even if CSK somehow acquired Pandya through a trade, trading him away immediately for Stokes would require Stokes to be available. He is not.
Can Ben Stokes Play in IPL 2027?
Ben Stokes cannot play in IPL 2027. The BCCI’s overseas registration rule blocks him until the 2028 mega auction.
The rule is straightforward. Any overseas player who does not register for the mega auction becomes ineligible for mini auctions in the same three-year cycle. Stokes skipped the 2025 mega auction to manage his workload as England’s Test captain. That decision locked him out of both IPL 2026 and IPL 2027.
Stokes retired from international cricket on June 29, 2026, after England’s third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. He has said he will continue playing domestic and franchise cricket. He returned to competitive action for Durham in the One-Day Cup on July 21 and signed a record deal with Sydney Sixers in the BBL.
None of that changes his IPL status. He can only re-enter through the 2028 mega auction. He will be 37 by then.
So the entire premise of trading CSK players to acquire Stokes for IPL 2027 is built on a rule that does not allow it.

Even if the BCCI rule did not exist, trading a performing Jamie Overton for a 35-year-old Stokes would be poor squad management.
Overton was CSK’s second-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2026 with 14 wickets at an average of 17.78. He bowled pace with bounce in Indian conditions, something CSK have struggled to find consistently in their overseas slots. He cost Rs 1.50 crore. His batting strike rate of 162.40 in the lower order gave CSK finishing options they rarely had.
Stokes last played IPL in 2023. He featured in two matches for CSK, scored 15 runs, and left early. His body has required knee surgery and hamstring recovery across multiple seasons. His bowling, which once touched 140 kph regularly, has been managed carefully even in Test cricket. In T20 franchise conditions with quick turnarounds, the workload risk multiplies.
A pace-bowling all-rounder who delivers 14 wickets at under Rs 2 crore is one of the hardest assets to find in the IPL auction. Trading that for a player whose T20 availability has been unreliable for three consecutive seasons is not a calculated gamble. It is giving up a known quantity for a name.
CSK’s problem in IPL 2026 was not a lack of star names. They finished ninth with six wins in 14 games, missing playoffs for the third straight year. What they needed was consistency from their overseas slots. Overton provided that before his thigh injury cut his season short. Replacing him with Stokes would not fix the problem. It would create a new one.
