Ajit Agarkar’s term as India’s chief selector ends today, 4 October 2026, and the BCCI has not named a successor. Pragyan Ojha is running the senior selection committee as interim chief selector. Former wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel is the reported front-runner for the full-time job.
The BCCI says the decision comes after today.
“As far as Ajit Agarkar is concerned, his tenure is going to be over on 4th of October and we have sufficient time till 4th. We are going to take a decision regarding the vacant position which will be there after 4th of October.”

Whoever takes the chair, his real first test will not be a team sheet. It will be making one hard phone call stick, something his predecessor found he could no longer do.
The race comes down to Test caps. The selector with the most Test appearances leads the panel, which is why Ojha, with 24, chaired the selection meeting in Guwahati on 29 September.
| Name | Tests | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Parthiv Patel | 25 | Reported front-runner, not on the panel |
| Pragyan Ojha | 24 | Interim chief selector |
| Shiv Sundar Das | 23 | Selector |
| RP Singh | 14 | Selector |
| Ajay Ratra | 6 | Selector |
Agarkar’s exit leaves the West Zone seat open. If the new West Zone selector has more than 24 Tests, he becomes chairman. Parthiv, with 25, would go straight past Ojha into the chair.
He also clears the BCCI’s five-year retirement rule, the same rule that leaves Ashwin and Rahane ineligible. Parthiv retired from all cricket in December 2020.

Zaheer Khan and Ravi Shastri have also come up, but Parthiv is the only reported front-runner.
Parthiv has confirmed nothing. On 18 September he posted “Coming soon. I’m in.” on X, with no clear context. On commentary during the West Indies ODIs, he said he stays in the present and finds commentary more fun for now. He was also seen talking with Rohit Sharma in Guwahati, with no confirmation it was about selection.
Agarkar told the board before its 95th AGM on 18 September that he would not continue, though it wanted to extend his term. He leaves with the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup, though his tenure has been debated by Ashwin and Vikrant Gupta.
Reports point to Rohit’s future as the breaking point. The panel decided to move on from Rohit after the Lord’s ODI, and Ojha delivered that message. The BCCI then issued a statement backing Rohit, and a senior official told Telangana Today that was the day Agarkar knew he could not continue.
At the AGM, Saikia kept names out of the discussion.
“Today, there was no discussion on any individual. We still have 15 days to go… we will take a decision at an appropriate time.”

A selector’s power is not the pen that writes the squad. It is the phone call that tells a player he is out, and the player accepting it as final. When a board statement answered the panel’s call on Rohit, every fringe player in India learned that a selector’s word can be appealed.
Inside a dressing room, that changes behaviour. A player told the selectors are looking elsewhere stops working on his game and starts working on the people above them. The next chief must make one hard decision stand, because until he does, every message from the panel sounds like a first offer.
What the New Chief Selector Inherits
Agarkar’s last pick is the squad for the West Indies T20Is from 6 October. The new chief’s first squads are for a 12-match tour of New Zealand.
| Format | Matches | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| T20I | 5 | 22 October to 1 November |
| ODI | 5 | 4 to 15 November |
| Test | 2 | 19 November to 1 December |
An India A tour of three Tests runs alongside it from 24 October.
Then comes the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, from 2 October to 21 November 2027. India open against Australia in Cape Town on 7 October. Gill has set his World Cup target, and Rohit’s place in that squad is still unresolved.
