Mohammad Kaif Questions India’s Bowling After 247: “Missed a Trick”

Mohammad Kaif has blamed India’s bowlers for the 24-run loss to West Indies in the fourth T20I in Hyderabad. Speaking on Cricbuzz, he said the attack failed at the basics: over-rate, fielding and plans for the surface.

West Indies made 247 for 3 after India chose to field, with Shai Hope unbeaten on 102 off 50 balls. India were bowled out for 223 in 19.3 overs, Keemo Paul taking 5 for 41, and the series is level at 2-2.

It is the second time in this series India have been taken for nearly 250, after West Indies chased 250 in Ranchi.

The over-rate complaint sounds like paperwork. In the final over in Hyderabad, it handed Hope the gap for two sixes.

“The Indian bowling unit isn’t even able to do the basics right. This entire series, even in the ODIs, they’ve struggled to complete their overs on time. The fielding hasn’t helped this inexperienced bowling attack. So, India lacked in every aspect of the field, which is how you conceded nearly 250.”

India were behind the clock when the last over began, so only four fielders were allowed outside the 30-yard circle instead of five. At the death, that fifth boundary rider guards the set batter’s favourite hitting zone, and without him the batter knows exactly where to aim. Hope, on 90, hit the last two balls for six.

The penalty is the price of the 19 overs before it, and India bowled 13 wides, each one more ball to fit inside the same 85 minutes. In the Bengaluru decider on October 17, the cost rises: the square boundaries are 54 metres and dew is expected, which softens the ball and speeds it to the rope. One man short on the fence there will hurt more than it did in Hyderabad.

Kaif’s Slower Bouncer Point and the World Cup Warning

Bowler Runs Wickets Note
Mayank Yadav 52 0 6 wides
Arshdeep Singh 52 1
Axar Patel 45 1
Prince Yadav 36 1

Kaif said India bowled the wrong ball for the ground. He called the slower bouncer the most effective delivery in Hyderabad and pointed to Pat Cummins using it toward the square boundaries. Cummins removed Shivam Dube at this venue in IPL 2024 with exactly that ball.

When Mayank Yadav did try a slower ball, a 121.7 kmph delivery on a free hit, it went for six. West Indies made the variation work, with Paul bowling Prince Yadav with a 98.9 kph slower ball on a length.

Kaif’s bigger concern was the pattern. In a five-match series, he said, batters usually win some games and bowlers win the rest, but here the bowlers are winning none. Vikrant Gupta has also questioned India’s No. 8 plan.

“You will never win the World Cup with this combination.”
