BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has stated that there is no question of Rohit Sharma retiring from international cricket, dismissing weeks of speculation around the veteran opener’s ODI future.
“Rohit Sharma is a part of our team and is continuing to play. The things being circulated in the media and on social media have no meaning. As of now, there is no question of his retirement.”

Shukla made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the inauguration of the mini auction for the fourth season of the UP T20 League in Agra on Friday.

The retirement talk had gathered pace during India’s ODI series against England. Rohit scored just 11 in the first ODI at Edgbaston and 26 off 47 balls in the second ODI at Cardiff. During the Cardiff match, the Indian Express reported that the Lord’s ODI on July 19 could be his last for India. The report stated that the selection committee had communicated its decision to move on from the 39-year-old after the series, with plans to give Yashasvi Jaiswal a sustained run at the top of the order ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
ESPNcricinfo separately reported that selectors had told Rohit they would be providing opportunities to younger openers going forward with an eye on the next World Cup.
Shukla is the second senior BCCI official to publicly deny the retirement reports. Before the Lord’s match, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the speculation around Rohit’s future directly.
“I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things.”

Rohit responded on the field. In the third ODI at Lord’s, chasing 388, he scored 138 off 110 balls with 17 fours and 5 sixes. He became the first Indian to score an ODI century at Lord’s. He and captain Shubman Gill put on 147 for the opening wicket before Rohit fell in the 39th over. India made 360/7 but lost by 27 runs, conceding the series 1-2.
After the match, Rohit made it clear the outside noise had no effect on him.
“Look my job is with the bat, come and play, represent my country. That’s what I’ve been told to do since I made my debut. The noise, since I made my debut, was there. And till the time I’m going to stay here, it’s always going to be there. So it doesn’t really matter too much. What matters is what I do on the field.”

Shukla Backs Gambhir and Gill After Difficult UK Tour
Shukla’s comments went beyond Rohit’s future. He also defended India’s current coaching and captaincy setup, which has come under growing scrutiny after the team’s results across the UK. India lost the Ireland T20I series 0-2, were whitewashed 0-4 in the England T20Is, and then lost the ODI series 1-2.
“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the decision on who stays in the team and who does not rests with the selectors. The Indian team is performing well and winning matches, so there is no need for any changes at present.”

The public backing of head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill, and Rohit’s continued place in the squad signals the BCCI’s position heading into the next phase of India’s ODI calendar.

The language of these two denials is worth reading carefully. Saikia said Rohit would continue “as long as he is in the scheme of things.” That is conditional. His place depends on what happens next. Shukla’s language was stronger: “no question of his retirement.” The gap between the two tells you what changed between July 18 and July 25. What changed was 138 runs at Lord’s.
But a century does not close this conversation. It changes the leverage. When a senior player under exit pressure produces a knock like that, it buys time. It raises the political cost of dropping him immediately. The selectors’ reported plan to invest in younger openers before the 2027 World Cup does not disappear because of one innings. What disappears is the ease with which that transition could have been forced.
This matters because the same pattern played out with Rohit’s Test retirement. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Rohit was reportedly informed his place was not guaranteed. He stepped down from the Sydney Test. He denied retirement talk publicly. He then retired from Tests in May 2025. The sequence of selector communication, public denial, and eventual retirement is familiar territory in Indian cricket.
The difference this time is what Rohit proved at Lord’s, and what the board cannot afford to ignore. The reports said he was not in the plans for the 2027 World Cup. He responded the way senior players respond: with runs. And he was right to. Because World Cup pressure is a completely different challenge. Young players can score runs in bilateral ODIs. They can look ready. But the weight of a knockout match with the entire country watching is something only experience can handle. Rohit scored five centuries in a single World Cup campaign in 2019. He led India to a T20 World Cup title in 2024. AB de Villiers himself recently acknowledged that World Cup pedigree. That kind of experience in the dressing room cannot be replaced overnight, no matter how talented the next generation is.
What Lord’s showed is not just that Rohit can still bat. It showed that when everything around him was collapsing, the speculation, the poor tour results, the reported selector conversations, he walked out and dominated. That is the exact quality India needs most at a World Cup. The board knows this. That is why the denials got stronger after Lord’s.
