Jonathan Trott has emerged as a strong contender for Chennai Super Kings’ head coach role ahead of IPL 2027, according to a report by Cricket Central on September 6, 2026.
The franchise parted ways with Stephen Fleming in July after 18 years together. Fleming’s departure was the franchise’s decision, per RevSportz, following three consecutive seasons without playoff qualification. He has since moved to become England’s Test coach.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the franchise will appoint an overseas coach. A Times of India report places the announcement deadline at September 20, with a preference for someone who has previously worked with MS Dhoni.
Trott’s name adds a surprise fourth option to a race that previously centered on Brendon McCullum, Michael Hussey, and Albie Morkel.

Trott’s coaching credentials at the international level are genuine. He took over Afghanistan in 2022 and transformed the team from a chaotic setup into a competitive force.
Under his tenure, Afghanistan recorded historic victories against Pakistan and England, won bilateral series against Bangladesh and South Africa, and competed in two ICC events. Rashid Khan, Ibrahim Zadran, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz all grew under his guidance.
His farewell after the 2026 T20 World Cup reflected the depth of that work. “I remember how chaotic that first tour is to where we are now is chalk and cheese,” Trott said.
That record, however, sits alongside a less convincing franchise coaching history.
| Franchise | League | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Pretoria Capitals | SA20 | Second from bottom, replaced by Sourav Ganguly |
| Gulf Giants | ILT20 Season 4 | Replaced by Simon Helmot after one season |
Two franchise stints with no trophies and no extended runs.
The other names in contention each carry a direct CSK connection that Trott does not.
| Candidate | CSK Link | Current Role |
|---|---|---|
| Brendon McCullum | Played for CSK (968 runs, 33 matches) | England white-ball coach |
| Michael Hussey | CSK batting coach since 2018 | Internal frontrunner |
| Albie Morkel | CSK player, 2010 and 2011 title wins | Joburg Super Kings head coach |
| Gary Kirsten | Coached India alongside Dhoni to 2011 World Cup | Available |
Kris Srikkanth has publicly argued CSK “should say no” to McCullum, citing his removal from England’s Test coaching role. Hussey is widely seen as the safe continuity pick. Morkel’s appointment at the sister franchise is viewed as a potential stepping stone.
Trott has no prior connection to CSK, no history with Dhoni, and no IPL experience as a player or coach.
What CSK Need Goes Beyond Credentials
“We are not thinking about the new signings or any trade deal at the moment as our focus is on getting a new head coach on the board. We have spoken to the interested candidates, and we will sit down to finalise a name.”
Kasi Viswanathan, CSK CEO, August 2026
CSK finished eighth in IPL 2026 with six wins from 14 matches. They need a coach who can reverse that trajectory immediately.
“We will have a head coach. The management is obviously thinking about it. There is still plenty of time before the IPL, so there is no rush to make a decision.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad, August 2026
Viswanathan and whole-time director Rupa Gurunath will finalise the selection after consulting with Gaikwad and Dhoni, whose influence over the dressing room remains central to every coaching decision.
Insider Read
Trott’s greatest coaching strength is building systems and culture from nothing. Afghanistan needed exactly that, and he delivered. CSK do not need building. They need someone who walks into a dressing room with Dhoni, Ruturaj, and Ravindra Jadeja and commands immediate respect from players who have won five titles.
Managing established stars, navigating franchise politics, and delivering results inside a two-month window requires instincts that international coaching with a developing team does not teach. Trott’s two stints in franchise cricket suggest that gap has not been bridged yet.
