Michael Vaughan said what every cricket fan was thinking. England lost their greatest all-rounder because of a curfew. One series later, the curfew does not exist.
The former England captain made the point on the latest episode of Stick to Cricket, the Betfair podcast he hosts alongside Alastair Cook, Phil Tufnell, and David Lloyd. His words were sharp and deliberate.

The timeline makes Vaughan’s frustration impossible to argue with. In June, Ben Stokes broke a midnight curfew after England’s first Test win over New Zealand at Lord’s. He and Gus Atkinson ended up at Rex Rooms, a Chelsea nightclub, where a Saracens rugby player attacked a member of England’s security staff. The ECB suspended both players for the second Test at The Oval.
Three weeks later, Stokes retired from international cricket during the third Test at Trent Bridge. He finished with 7,273 Test runs and 252 wickets, the first player since Jacques Kallis to reach 7,000 runs and 250 wickets in the format.
Two months after that, Joe Root scrapped the curfew entirely.
Vaughan had been questioning the ECB’s handling from the start. Within days of the suspension, he wrote in the Daily Telegraph that Stokes had earned the right to survive one mistake. He suggested the ECB may have used the incident to push Stokes out, calling it extraordinary that anyone inside English cricket would move against a player of that stature over a curfew breach.
“I’ll be so disappointed if it is, if English cricket has got to the stage where one of our greatest has had to step down because of the way that whole situation was handled.”

The confusion around the curfew itself made the fallout worse. Atkinson told managing director Rob Key he did not know the curfew was in effect. Of the seven players who went out that night, five left when they realized the curfew existed. Two, including the captain, stayed. Brendon McCullum later admitted the curfew may not have been communicated clearly enough.
Root Scraps the Curfew
Joe Root’s first act as returning captain told the full story. On the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast ahead of the Pakistan series, he confirmed the policy was gone.
“There’s not going to be a curfew. I don’t think this needs to be a big deal, to be honest. My view on curfews is I don’t think they work, and if you want guys to take responsibility on the field, they’ve got to feel like they can be grown adults and make good, strong decisions off it.”

The ECB confirmed the curfew would no longer be in place. Root’s message to the squad was simple: be adults, look after yourselves, look after each other.
England played their first Test under Stephen Fleming at Headingley against Pakistan. No curfew. No incident. The policy that cost England their captain and best player lasted exactly one series.
