Chennai Super Kings have not hired a head coach. They have not made a single trade. Auction planning has not started. Pre-season staff appointments are frozen.
Every decision CSK need to make for IPL 2027 is on hold, according to multiple reports. The franchise is waiting for MS Dhoni to decide his role before any other appointment moves forward.
According to RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan, CSK have suspended all pre-season operations. “Chennai Super Kings have put all their activities on hold,” Juglan reported. “For the auction, coaches, selection, and even rejection, they need either a coach or a mentor. Mahendra Singh Dhoni will take one of these two positions, and once that happens, you will immediately see these activities resume.”
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the franchise is waiting on Dhoni. “We have not discussed anything with MS as of now. MS takes his decisions on his own, and we respect that,” Viswanathan said. “We would always like to have him as a permanent fixture at CSK in whatever capacity, be it as a player, coach or mentor, whatever he would like.”
Stephen Fleming’s departure in July 2026 after 18 years as head coach created the vacancy. Reports from the Sunday Guardian, citing the Times of India, state the new head coach will be announced by September 20 and will be “someone who has worked with Dhoni earlier.” According to the report, the management wants the incoming coach to share a “close personal connection” with him. The search for CSK’s next head coach has become entirely about one question: does the candidate know Dhoni?
The candidates all carry that connection. Michael Hussey has served as CSK’s batting coach and played six seasons under Dhoni. Albie Morkel won IPL titles with CSK in 2010 and 2011 and now coaches Joburg Super Kings, the sister franchise. Eoin Morgan captained KKR against Dhoni’s CSK in the 2021 IPL final. Aakash Chopra has named Ravichandran Ashwin, Suresh Raina, and Sanjay Bangar as Indian options, all of whom played under Dhoni either at CSK or with India.
Morgan reportedly demanded 18 to 20 crore annually for the role, a figure Juglan described as enough to “set up the entire coaching setup.” CSK have not accepted that number, according to Juglan. Hussey was recently approached by Fleming to join England’s setup, making his future at CSK uncertain. Brendon McCullum and Fleming were also discussed as a coaching pair before Fleming took the England job.
Former India opener Kris Srikkanth said Dhoni’s arrangement must be settled first. “What will MS Dhoni’s place in CSK be going forward? That arrangement has to be fixed first, and only then will everything else fall in place,” he said on his YouTube channel.
According to a RevSportz report, Dhoni is “likely to be given control over cricketing matters” at CSK. He has reportedly spent extensive time discussing potential coaching profiles with CEO Viswanathan. The report adds that the incoming coach will operate in an environment where Dhoni remains influential in squad decisions.
On the playing question, Viswanathan was direct.

Dhoni missed the entire IPL 2026 season. A calf injury that never fully recovered was followed by a thumb problem. He did not play a single match, the first complete season absence of his IPL career. Karn Sharma’s comments on Dhoni’s retirement earlier this year only added to the speculation without resolving it.
Former CSK teammate Subramaniam Badrinath revealed on his YouTube channel that Dhoni has drawn one clear line about how he would return. “He has personally told me that he won’t play as an Impact Player. He sees himself as a full-time keeper, and that means he has to be on the field for the full 20 overs,” Badrinath said.
Badrinath added that Dhoni’s physical limitations make the Impact Player role more practical. “His body cannot withstand long durations, which even Fleming has said. He is only going to bat after the 16th over and keep wickets.” But according to Badrinath, Dhoni rejected the option.
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, when asked about Dhoni’s IPL 2027 future after a loss to Gujarat Titans in May 2026, said: “You and I’ll get to know it next year.”

According to reports, all three depend on a decision Dhoni has not made public.
