Ganguly’s DC Coaching Overhaul: 3 Big Names Replace Entire IPL 2027 Staff

Cricket News

Delhi Capitals have torn up their coaching department. Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, and Amit Mishra are set to lead the franchise’s new-look support staff for IPL 2027, replacing the entire setup that oversaw two consecutive failed playoff campaigns.

The franchise confirmed through a senior official that a complete overhaul is underway. Hemang Badani, who served as head coach for IPL 2025 and 2026, will be replaced. Venugopal Rao (Director of Cricket, IPL) and bowling coach Munaf Patel are also on their way out.

Ganguly is expected to step into the head coach role. Yuvraj Singh will join as batting coach in his first professional coaching stint in the IPL. Mishra, the former India leg-spinner who played 67 matches for DC across multiple seasons, joins the setup after talks with Anil Kumble fell through.

“There will be a complete overhaul of the coaching staff in Delhi Capitals as JSW will be running the management for the 2027-28 seasons.”

Reports from Sportskeeda also name Chaminda Vaas as fast bowling coach, though this appointment has not been confirmed through official DC channels or wire services.

The timing is not a coincidence. Delhi Capitals operate under a two-year rotational ownership model between JSW Sports and GMR Group. GMR ran the men’s IPL team for 2025 and 2026. JSW takes over for 2027 and 2028. Every coaching appointment from the GMR era gets replaced when control changes hands.

This is a structural reset, not a performance review. Though performance made it easier.

DC finished sixth in IPL 2026. They missed the playoffs for the second straight year. Under Badani, the team won enough matches to stay in contention deep into both seasons but never strung together the consistency needed to break into the top four. The franchise has not won an IPL title and last reached the final in 2020 under Ricky Ponting.

Ganguly’s move from boardroom to dugout has been building for two years. JSW Sports appointed him Director of Cricket in October 2024. In that role, he oversaw squad building, auction strategy, and performance tracking across JSW’s cricket properties, including Delhi Capitals (IPL and WPL) and Pretoria Capitals (SA20).

His first hands-on coaching assignment came at Pretoria Capitals for SA20 Season 4 in early 2026. The team finished runners-up, winning five of ten league-stage matches before losing the final to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Pretoria captain Keshav Maharaj credited Ganguly directly for the team’s culture.

Ganguly himself signalled the shift from background to frontline months ago.

“That’s why I’m working full-time with the franchise this year, and this involvement will continue into the upcoming IPL season as well.”

He attended DC’s first-round trials at Just Cricket Academy in Bengaluru in August 2026 alongside Yuvraj and Mishra. A second round of trials followed in Delhi on September 10.

What Yuvraj and Mishra Bring

Yuvraj Singh has never held an official coaching position in the IPL. But his mentoring work in Punjab cricket over the past several years is well documented. He has worked closely with Shubman Gill, Abhishek Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, and Priyansh Arya. At the Bengaluru trials, he was spotted standing behind the umpire, closely watching batters.

“Who wouldn’t want a Yuvraj Singh in the dugout? Many of his former teammates, including Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, have had coaching stints in the IPL.”

The transition from informal mentoring to a franchise dugout is a different challenge. Nehra runs the Gujarat Titans. Zaheer Khan moved from Mumbai Indians’ director of cricket role into national selection conversations. Sehwag has been involved with Punjab Kings. Yuvraj is the last of that generation’s big names to step into an IPL coaching role.

Mishra’s appointment came through a different route. DC initially pursued Anil Kumble for a role in the setup. Those negotiations collapsed. Journalist Rohit Juglan reported on September 11 that Mishra would step in, coinciding with the start of a four-day DC training camp focused on trials.

Mishra played for Delhi Capitals across multiple IPL stints, taking 97 wickets in the tournament overall. His understanding of the franchise’s environment and player pool is institutional knowledge that a new coaching group needs.

The ownership rotation adds a layer that most IPL franchises do not deal with. Key decisions like auctions, captaincy, player releases, and retentions are made jointly by the Delhi Capitals board, with senior leadership from both JSW and GMR. But day-to-day cricketing operations, including coaching appointments, belong to whichever group holds operational control that cycle.

This means every two years, DC’s coaching staff faces potential upheaval regardless of results. It is a system that prioritizes each ownership group’s autonomy over long-term coaching continuity. Other IPL franchises operate under single-owner structures where coaching continuity is a choice, not a cycle.

Insider Read

Big names in a coaching staff solve the credibility problem. Players listen differently when the head coach has 113 Tests and the batting coach has a World Cup-winning six-hitting record. That part is real.

But DC’s problems over the past two seasons were not about players ignoring the coaches. They were about squad balance, middle-order collapses at home, and an inability to close tight matches in the second half of the tournament. Those are planning and execution failures that do not disappear because the dugout now has more famous faces in it. Ganguly’s real test is not whether players respect him. It is whether he can build a squad through the auction, set clear tactical plans, and hold them through a 70-day season. The SA20 runners-up finish showed he can build culture. The IPL will show whether he can build a winning machine.
