The video came days after India’s ODI series defeat to England. Reports had emerged before that series that India’s selectors had told Rohit he was no longer part of their 2027 World Cup plans, with the selection committee building around Shubman Gill at the top of the order. Rohit scored 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs. The third ODI at Lord’s was widely reported to be his final appearance in India colours.
He responded with 138 off 84 balls, becoming the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s. India still lost the series 2-1. ABD watched that innings and, three days later, recorded his answer.
