The BCCI is planning an India XI vs Rest of the World XI match to celebrate 100 years of the board, according to a report by journalist Sumit Ghosh. The exhibition fixture would serve as the centrepiece of the board’s centenary celebrations, which were formally approved at the 95th Annual General Meeting on September 18, 2026.
No venue, format, or date has been confirmed. The BCCI has not named any players for either side.
The report from Sportskeeda emerged one day after the AGM in Mumbai, where the General Body initiated the process for a year-long centenary programme.

The logistics of staging an India vs World XI match sit behind the idea. What sounds like a natural celebration carries scheduling, financial, and diplomatic complications that have derailed similar plans before.
What the BCCI has officially confirmed is narrower than the report suggests.
“The General Body has initiated the process for the BCCI centenary celebrations in 2028. The centenary will be celebrated through a year-long programme, commencing in December 2027 continuing through 2028, marking a landmark milestone in the history of Indian Cricket.”
BCCI, 95th AGM press release, September 18, 2026
The AGM was attended by President Mithun Manhas, Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, Secretary Devajit Saikia, and former President Sourav Ganguly. The board approved grand celebrations for IPL 2027’s 20th edition alongside the centenary plans.
The BCCI was founded on December 1, 1928, in Madras. Its first president was R.E. Grant Govan. India played its first Test match four years later, in 1932 at Lord’s.
The last time India played a Rest of the World XI was in March 1995 in Cuttack, a match India won by five wickets. Before that, India beat a World XI by 65 runs at Eden Gardens in June 1994. Both were exhibition fixtures with no official status.
A more recent attempt never got off the ground. In July 2022, the Ministry of Culture proposed an India vs World XI match at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi to mark India’s 75th Independence Day. A BCCI source at the time said the board would need “at least 13-14 international players and their availability is something that we need to check on.” The match never happened. The Caribbean Premier League and England’s Hundred were running at the same time, and compensation for international players remained unresolved.
That is the pattern. The idea is always popular. The execution is where it stalls.

Assembling a World XI is not a selection exercise. It is a negotiation across eight or nine cricket boards, each protecting their own players from injury and workload risks outside of ICC events. No board willingly releases a fast bowler for a match that counts for nothing on the official record.
Then there is the question of who plays. Reports from CricInformer listed names like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Ricky Ponting, and Wasim Akram for the proposed squads. If this is a legends match, fitness assessments and insurance become the obstacles. If it involves current players, the ICC’s Future Tours Programme and bilateral commitments make a window nearly impossible to find. The 2022 attempt failed for exactly this reason, and the international calendar has only grown more congested since.
The BCCI has the financial weight to make it happen. Whether it can align every other moving part in time for 2028 is the question this report does not answer.
What is confirmed: the BCCI will celebrate its centenary through a year-long programme starting December 2027. What is reported but unconfirmed: an India XI vs Rest of the World XI match as part of those celebrations. The distance between the two is where the real story will unfold over the next year.
