Yuzvendra Chahal has taken 15 wickets in 7 innings at an average of 21.00 in the 2026 Metro Bank One-Day Cup, making him the leading wicket-taker among overseas players in the tournament. The Indian leg spinner is in his third consecutive summer at Northamptonshire, a county that has become his competitive home while India has not selected him since August 2023.
His best return came against Lancashire on August 2, where he took 4-60 and was named the pick of the bowlers in a 67-run victory. In his most recent match against Somerset on August 9, Chahal and off-spinner Rob Keogh ran through the batting lineup together, bowling Somerset out for 185 as Northamptonshire won by seven wickets with 120 balls remaining. Chahal finished with 3-35.

Chahal has not played for India in any format since a T20I series against West Indies in August 2023. He was named in the squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup but did not play a single match. India won the trophy without using him.
“I don’t think about what is not in my hands. Right now, he (Kuldeep) is the No. 1 wrist spinner in the world. It shows in the way he is bowling both in IPL and international cricket.”

That answer, given months before this county stint began, explains why he is in Northampton and not waiting by the phone. Chahal chose to play.

Why Northamptonshire Keeps Bringing Him Back
This is Chahal’s third consecutive English summer at Wantage Road. He first joined the county in 2024 for one List A match and five Championship games. In that debut One-Day Cup appearance against Kent, he took 5-14 in 10 overs, including five maidens, bowling out a team for 82. In the Championship that year, he finished with 19 wickets at 21.10 and career-best match figures of 9-99 against Derbyshire.
He returned in 2025, took 12 Championship wickets in three matches including a career-best 6-118, and signed again for 2026 before the season ended.
“Yuzi is a magnificent asset to this squad. His record across his career speaks for itself and he brings so much class and experience to the group.”
Darren Lehmann, Northamptonshire head coach, October 2025
Lehmann, the former Australia batter who coaches Northamptonshire, has built his spin strategy around Chahal and off-spinner Rob Keogh operating in tandem. The pair have combined to dismantle batting lineups across formats for two years. In the 2024 Championship victory over Derbyshire, Keogh took 5-44 and Chahal 4-54 as they bowled the opposition out for 132 in the second innings.
Insider Read:
Chahal’s economy of 4.50 across seven One-Day Cup innings in England tells you something that the wicket column alone cannot. English surfaces do not suit wrist spin the way subcontinental pitches do. The Dukes ball swings and seams. It does not grip and rip off the surface the way a Kookaburra or SG ball does on dry, abrasive wickets. A leg spinner in England has to earn every turn off the pitch. The ball skids on. The bounce is lower. Batters trust the surface to play through the line.
What Chahal has done is change his method entirely. He bowls flatter, pushes the ball through quicker, and uses the crease width to create angles rather than relying on revolutions alone. His five maidens in 10 overs on his Northamptonshire debut in 2024 told the full story. That is not a leg spinner trying to turn the ball square. That is a leg spinner who has figured out that in England, accuracy and pace changes beat flight and spin.
Across three English summers, Chahal has adapted to conditions that historically punish his type of bowling. That adaptation is the real achievement behind these numbers.
