India are likely to tour South Africa for a six-match ODI series before the 2027 World Cup, according to a report in The Indian Express on 2 October 2026. Johannesburg, Cape Town and Centurion are the reported venues. Neither board has confirmed dates or venues yet.

Reports in early September said the Indian team management asked the BCCI to arrange a preparatory series, and the board opened talks with Cricket South Africa.

“Expected to travel to South Africa well ahead of the World Cup as part of their preparations.”

If the reported venues hold, India would play at the exact grounds where they open their World Cup 2027 campaign.

Date Opponent Venue
7 October 2027 Australia Newlands, Cape Town
10 October 2027 Pakistan Wanderers, Johannesburg
14 October 2027 Afghanistan Centurion

Cape Town and Centurion also host the semi-finals. The Wanderers hosts the final on 21 November 2027, as the full list of World Cup 2027 venues shows.

On paper, all three are South African grounds. In practice, Cape Town plays nothing like the other two, and India’s bowlers would need every one of those six games to adjust.

Insider Read

Conditions in South Africa change drastically from ground to ground. Cape Town sits at sea level. The Wanderers is about 1,739 metres up on the Highveld, and Centurion about 1,430 metres. Up there, the ball flies through the air, bounces more and the boundaries start to feel small.

That forces every bowler to pull his length back. A good length at Newlands gets pulled or driven at the Wanderers. The quicks, and spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, need overs at altitude to find that new length. Meeting this bounce for the first time against Australia or Pakistan at a World Cup is a risk no side should take.

India’s Record in South Africa

Tour ODIs Result
2017-18 6 Won 5-1
2021-22 3 Lost 0-3
2023-24 3 Won 2-1

Overall, India have won 24 of 59 ODIs in South Africa and lost 31.

The last six-match tour, in 2018, gave India their first ODI series win in the country. Virat Kohli scored 558 runs, a record for a bilateral ODI series, and Kuldeep took 17 wickets.

No dates are fixed yet. Earlier reports placed the series after IPL 2027. The World Cup opens on 2 October 2027 with the Super Series in Windhoek, and Shubman Gill’s India begin against Australia five days later.
