Mohit Sharma will be Chennai Super Kings’ bowling coach from IPL 2027. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the appointment to The Times of India on 29 September, and said head coach Zaheer Khan recommended him.
It is Mohit’s first coaching job. The 38-year-old retired from all forms of cricket in December 2025. He takes over the role Eric Simons held under Stephen Fleming.
“Mohit will join CSK as our new bowling coach. His name was recommended by our head coach Zaheer Khan. Mohit was tremendous with us as a player as well and we hope he will do a great job as bowling coach.”

Mohit took 57 wickets in 48 matches across two spells for CSK. Those numbers explain why the franchise trusts him. The years when nobody wanted him explain what he can teach.
His career went from the top of the IPL to the nets and back.
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2014 | Purple Cap, 23 wickets for CSK |
| 2015 | In India’s World Cup squad |
| 2022 | Unsold at the auction after back surgery, joined Gujarat Titans as a net bowler |
| 2023 | Bought at his base price of Rs 50 lakh, took 27 wickets, joint second-highest that season |
| December 2025 | Retired at 37 with 134 wickets in 120 IPL matches |
That 2023 season ended with Mohit bowling the last over of the final against CSK. They needed 13, and Ravindra Jadeja got them off the last two balls.
Insider Read
Every squad has a bowler whose rhythm has gone and whose confidence has gone with it. Most coaches can spot the fault on video. Very few know what it feels like to sit at home wondering if anyone will pick you again.
Mohit fixed a finished career with his own hands. He went from a World Cup squad to bowling in the nets for a team that had not bought him, and came back better. For an uncapped CSK seamer who has lost his way, that lesson matters more than any grip or wrist position: how to build a new version of yourself from zero.
What Zaheer’s CSK Staff Looks Like So Far
Mohit is the first confirmed change to Zaheer’s support staff. Zaheer replaced Fleming on a one-year deal after CSK finished ninth in IPL 2026, their third straight season without a playoff spot.
Assistant coaches Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are expected to stay. The batting coach role is still open after Michael Hussey left.
