Hardik Pandya is reportedly set to join Kolkata Knight Riders as captain ahead of IPL 2027, according to RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan. Juglan posted on X on August 6, “Update HP (C) PS, sorry CSK fans,” with the purple emoji matching KKR’s team colour and the “(C)” pointing to captaincy. He later added on his YouTube channel that an IPL team captain had informed him Pandya is heading to KKR.
The claim gained traction quickly. Multiple outlets picked it up within hours, and the story shifted the entire IPL trade conversation away from Chennai Super Kings, who had been the frontrunner for Pandya since May. CSK had already denied the trade rumours publicly through their CEO.
KKR’s interest makes sense when you look at their situation. Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in July 2026, leaving the franchise without a captain. Under Rahane, KKR finished eighth in IPL 2025 and seventh in IPL 2026, missing the playoffs both times. Ryan Ten Doeschate’s departure from the coaching setup earlier added to the transition. MI reportedly want a marquee batter and a bowler, or Cameron Green, in exchange for Pandya. KKR paid 25.2 crore for Green at the IPL 2026 auction, but his Ashes commitments create scheduling uncertainty that weakens him as a trade asset. What KKR are willing to offer remains unclear.
The IPL 2027 trade window opened in late June 2026 and will remain active until approximately the second week of December, roughly one week before the mini-auction.
