Ravichandran Ashwin cannot become India’s chief selector. The BCCI’s eligibility rules require candidates to have retired from all forms of cricket for at least five years, and Ashwin is still an active cricketer. His five-year waiting period has not even started.
Viral social media posts in late July 2026 claimed Ashwin is set to replace Ajit Agarkar as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The posts, which originated from unverified fan accounts on X, used images of Ashwin from the BCCI Naman Awards 2026 ceremony in New Delhi. The claim has no basis.

The BCCI’s official eligibility criteria for national selectors, published on BCCI.tv on August 22, 2025, states that a candidate “must have retired from the game at least 5 years prior.” The wording is specific. It says “the game,” not “international cricket.” Candidates must also have played a minimum of 7 Test matches, or 30 First-Class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 First-Class matches. Ashwin clears the playing requirement comfortably with 106 Tests and 116 ODIs. The retirement requirement is where the claim falls apart.
Every article currently ranking for this topic calculates Ashwin’s eligibility from December 18, 2024, the date he retired from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. By that math, they place his eligibility at late 2029 or September 2030. That calculation is wrong.
Ashwin retired from international cricket in December 2024. He retired from the IPL on August 27, 2025, after a difficult final season with Chennai Super Kings. But he did not retire from cricket. In June 2026, he signed with the San Francisco Unicorns for Major League Cricket 2026. He played at least one match before a right knee injury ruled him out of the tournament in July 2026. Peter Siddle replaced him.
The BCCI rule does not distinguish between international cricket, domestic cricket, and franchise cricket. It says “the game.” As of August 2026, Ashwin has not announced retirement from all forms of cricket. His five-year cooling-off period has not begun.

Ashwin himself addressed the speculation months before it went viral. Speaking on his YouTube channel in January 2025, he made his position clear.

Ajit Agarkar has served as chairman of selectors since July 2023. His contract was extended after India’s 2026 T20 World Cup triumph. Under his watch, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, the 2025 Asia Cup, and the 2026 T20 World Cup. With that record, there is no vacancy to fill.
Even if Agarkar’s tenure ends after the 2027 World Cup, Ashwin would still be years away from eligibility. The earliest he could qualify is five years after he formally retires from all cricket, a date that has not arrived yet.
